WWE Set To Make Big Shift In Dominik And Rey Mysterio Storyline

Writer Michael Hansen

Fans have heard about a possible split between Dominik and Rey Mysterio and WWE has teased it for a number of weeks, but nothing has yet gone down other than some miscommunication between father and son. Expect that to change, according to a recent report.

As per Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Podcast, he's reached out to a source in WWE who says creative is ready to pull the trigger on a change that would see Dominik and Rey Mysterio split, with one member of the duo potentially turning heel. He wrote in a tweet on Wednesday, "Spoke with a source at WWE. The breakup and feud is happening soon."

Whether or not Rey turns heel or Dom does remain unclear. In fact, WWE may try to have neither turn but speculation is that it would make more sense to have the father either turn on the son or the son turn on the father. Some believed the split would happen around WrestleMania but the change that saw Dominik selected for the Survivor Series team, only to be removed after he was dominated by Bobby Lashley this week on Raw might hint at the start of the new storyline.

Dominik and Rey have been frustrated with one another for a few weeks now. Dom feels as though he can do more on his own while Rey seems to feel as though he needs to protect his son and that Dom's inexperience is something that needs to be worked on. It's only a matter of time before one blames the other for repeated mishaps and the split goes down.

Who Turns Heel?

It would be a huge shock if Rey Mysterio turned heel as few fans would expect it. He can lash out at his son for not showing respect and appreciating the wisdom he's trying to impart. That said, Dominik playing the heel role here is the likely direction WWE goes with this. The classic 'you've been holding me down storyline' typically works well in these types of situations.

It will be a real test of Dominik's range and potential in WWE if he can play a heel role well. Rey has already said it's something he's not very good at doing.
