Wild Stories From The WWE Legends Of Wrestling Roundtables

Writer Matthew Cannon

Ask any old school wrestling legend how they learned the ins and outs of the business and they’ll tell you about the long car rides with the boys. They’d traverse the open plains from territory to territory, chatting about the business with their friends and the legends that they used to look up to. For many, it was the best crash course they’d ever receive in the wrestling business.

The closest thing the WWE has come to replicating this feeling was their old Legends Of Wrestling series. Jim Ross and Mean Gene would host these hour long conversational roundtables with fellow superstars discussing a litany of topics and a ton of great stories. Here are the wildest of the bunch.

8 Michael Hayes And Sheik’s Wild Ride

During a discussion about two legends, Andre The Giant and The Iron Sheik, Michael Hayes shared a personable story about the Iron Sheik. The lifelong partier and Freebird was on Retroactive Probation for a substance that is now legal but was then not. He was driving with Sheik and Jimmy Garvin. Hayes was driving when they came upon a DEA search stop.

If they got caught, Hayes would go to jail but Sheik thought it would be a good idea to let the officers know exactly who they are and they have get to live TV. Miraculously, the officers let the Freebirds and Sheik ride off into the sunset.

7 Judy Bagwell Calls Out Sick

Rick Steiner And Judy Bagwell Cropped

Whether she was on a forklift or running around with Rick Steiner as a WCW Tag Team Champion, Judy Bagwell was doing a bang up job at making people thumb their noses up at WCW. She would eventually help WWE thumb their noses up her son, Buff Bagwell.

While he was doing a less than stellar job at endearing himself to the WWE, Judy didn’t help matters and called out sick for her son’s behalf. JR was nonplussed and explained to Mrs. Bagwell in simple terms not to do that ever again.

6 Mick, Mark And Socko

When you have the eloquence and humor of Mick Foley, generally your stories end up with a punchline. When the table was discussing great rivalries, they brought up Austin and McMahon, they discussed with Foley and the birth of Mr. Socko during the Bedpan McMahon scene. They also joked about where Foley stored the sock during his matches.

When discussing how clean the sock would be for The Undertaker, the conversely discussed what happened when Mankind wrestled Mark Henry - “At this point in his career, Mark Henry doesn’t need to know there is a clean sock.”

5 The King Shuts Heyman Up

During the Heatseekers episode of the show, Jerry 'The King' Lawler finally spilled the beans on his heat with a young Paul Heyman. When Paul E. Dangerously had come to Memphis, he ran his mouth a bit too much while working for Lawler.

The King got fed up and broke the future Special Counsel’s jaw. This was all because Heyman didn’t want to head up on the scaffold during the long promoted scaffold match.

4 Pat Patterson Fights Off The Samoans

The legendary Pat Patterson might be best remembered for creating The Royal Rumble. But he was also a double tough competitor for his day as well. When wrestling in the San Francisco territory, the first ever Intercontinental champion waged war at The Cow Palace against The High Chief, Peter Maivia.

As he was fighting with the Samoan god, fellow Samoan fans like Afa and Sika were in attendance. They couldn’t bear to see their hero (and eventual trainer and blood brother) get pounded on. No matter where they would sit in the arena or how much security was there - they’d do all they could to help rescue their hero.

3 How Nash And Hall Got More Money Thanks To Diesel and Razor

Kevin Nash joined the show to chat with his fellow legends about a topic he knew a lot about - The New World Order. The eloquent giant told a funny story about how inept the WCW brass were. According to Nash, he and Scott Hall were watching Raw with some members of the WCW brass nearby.

It was the night that Ross had announced that Razor and Diesel were coming back. They immediately forked over more cash to keep The Outsiders, despite that they were under contract and couldn’t leave even if they wanted to. When Rick Titan and Glenn Jacobs showed up in the roles, WCW realized they got had.

2 Sgt. Slaughter And The Prez

Sgt Slaughter Cropped

Despite not being an actual army sergeant or having military experience, the respect that Sgt. Slaughter has for the military and the respect that they have for him has always shown through. But several times throughout his career, Slaughter has gotten the presidential treatment just for what his character means to patriotism.

Once case saw him meeting Richard Nixon on a first class flight. Another had him be invited to The White House for dinner during the Reagan administration. Both times he was treated with the utmost respect.

1 Flair Thinks The nWo Was Terrible

X-Pac Scott Hall And Ric Flair Cropped

Being part of The Four Horsemen, Ric Flair knows a thing or two about factions. During this round table, the Nature Boy revealed his disdain for the New World Order. Flair spoke about how The Horsemen were businessmen who were willing to put over anyone and make all of their opponents look good.

In his opinion, the nWo were more concerned with putting themselves over, internal politics, and didn’t help to get anyone elevated.
