Things You Should Know About "Spyder" Nate Webb

Writer Michael Hansen

The history of professional wrestling is full of unsung heroes — tremendously talented wrestlers who never became the many stars that some people believe they should have become. This is especially true on the indies, where countless workhorses perform under the radar while ignored by mainstream fans. One such wrestler is “Spyder” Nate Webb.

A legend of the indie scene, Nate Webb is likely a wrestler that a lot of mainstream fans are unaware of. However, fans checking out the rapidly rising Game Changer Wrestling have seen Webb more than a few times on GCW events. Let’s cover Nate Webb’s career and what fans should know about such an underrated but standout talent.

10 IWA Mid-South

“Spyder” Nate Webb debuted in 1999 for Indianapolis-based Wild Championship Wrestling Outlaws, but began to make a bigger impression on fans when he debuted for indie notable IWA Mid-South in 2001. There, he teamed with deathmatch legend Mad Man Pondo and put on brutal matches with names like Necro Butcher and 2 Tuff Tony. But Webb also proved a capable performer outside the deathmatch style, showing his skills in matches with Chris Hero, Tracy Smothers, CM Punk, and Roderick Strong.

9 High Flying & Hardcore

Despite his hardcore cred, fans shouldn’t simply assume Nate Webb’s a deathmatch brawler. Part of what made Webb a favorite for many indie wrestling fans was his adeptness at the high-flying cruiserweight style, which he ended up employing to insane degrees at the height of his career, pulling off maneuvers in matches that look like a danger to one’s well-being. His style earned him two runs with the IWA Mid-South Light Heavyweight Championship and some memorable matches with fellow high-flyers like Matt Cross, Sonjay Dutt, and Matt Sydal.

8 Early TV Appearances

It’s entirely possible that there are long-time avid wrestling fans who may have seen Nate Webb on their TVs without even knowing it. From 2003 to 2004, Webb made jobber appearances for Impact Wrestling, mostly on minor show Xplosion, though he did have a couple of singles bouts with AJ Styles.

Webb would be more prominently featured on MTV’s Wrestling Society X, where he tagged with Josh Raymond as a team called The Trailer Park Boyz, performing not only on WSX’s main show, but also the online-exclusive Wrestling Society Xtra.

7 “Teenage Dirtbag”

Because licensing music is uncommon in indie wrestling, there are many wrestlers who have come up in the scene who use “real” songs as their entrance music and end up inextricably associated with said song. Much like how Bryan Danielson had “The Final Countdown” and Rich Swann had “All Night Long,” Nate Webb has Wheatus’ 2000 hit “Teenage Dirtbag.” In IWA Mid-South, it was not uncommon for Webb to let the entire song play out, and his association with the track would play out beautifully years later (see below).

6 Wrestled For CZW

From 2003 to 2008, one of “Spyder” Nate Webb’s major promotions was Combat Zone Wrestling, arguably the most prominent outfit that sought to be heir to the ECW throne. There, Webb became a member of Chris Cash’s faction Team Cash, teaming with Cash himself for a 56-day run with the CZW World Tag Team Championship before dropping the belts to H8 Club (Nick Gage and Justice Pain). Other big matches during Webb’s CZW run include an unsuccessful challenge for Kevin Steen’s CZW Iron Man Title and defeating B-Boy in a Loser Leaves Town match.

5 Took Part In CZW vs. ROH War

One of the big indie wrestling storylines of 2006 involved an interpromotional feud between CZW and Ring of Honor, during which Webb was part of the CZW contingent and thus made frequent appearances in ROH. Eventually things would come to a head in mid-2006, with Webb joining Eddie Kingston, Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli, and Necro Butcher as Team CZW in an acclaimed Cage of Death match at ROH’s Death or Dishonor 4 against the ultimately victorious ROH team of Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, Homicide, Adam Pearce, Ace Steel, and BJ Whitmer.

4 El Drunko

On top of being “Spyder” Nate Webb, he has a masked alter ego in the form of a boozed-up luchador named El Drunko. Switching out “Teenage Dirtbag” for “Magic” by The Cars, El Drunko was first introduced in 2004 while touring with Japanese deathmatch promotion Big Japan Wrestling, and Webb has since used the character periodically in Mad Man Pondo’s West Virginia-based IWA East Coast.

Most recently, El Drunko resurfaced in 2021, first taking on Eddy Only in a match at GCW’s Fight Forever: 44OH!'s What We Want and then hosting the event Tony Deppen’s Bier Haus a few months later.

3 Appears in GCW

The 2010s saw Nate Webb’s wrestling career begin to wind down as appearances became less and less frequent. In 2018, Webb made his GCW debut, first showing up in the Clusterf--- Battle Royal at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 2 and then taking on Jimmy Lloyd in a singles match the following month. Since then, he’s shared the GCW ring with talent like Nick Gage, Ricky Starks, and Mance Warner, but often shows up in the multi-man scramble matches that feature fellow high-flyers like Gringo Loco, Ninja Mack, and Alex Zayne.

2 Played To The Ring By Wheatus

“Spyder” Nate Webb’s association with “Teenage Dirtbag” would become a plot point in Webb’s feud with future AEW mega-heel Maxwell Jacob Friedman, as MJF had kayfabe trauma due to a disastrous rendition of the song at a high school talent show. When it came time for their big match at August 2018’s Joey Janela’s Lost In New York, Webb got a special entrance — Wheatus performing “Teenage Dirtbag” live as he made his way to the ring.

1 2021 Sabbatical

"Spyder" Nate Webb

On 5/1/2021, “Spyder” Nate Webb announced on his Twitter that he would be taking an indefinite hiatus from wrestling, citing that his “body, mind, and soul” were “beaten down to an extreme extent” and thanking everyone for their support. His sabbatical from the squared circle would last six months, with a return to the ring for a six-way scramble match at GCW’s The Aftermath in October. Since then, Nate Webb has wrestled exclusively for GCW in scrambles and battles royal.
