The Undertaker As Master Of Pain & 7 Other Superstars Gimmicks You Did Not Know About

Writer Owen Barnes

Some of the most popular wrestlers such as The Undertaker, Triple H, and Stone Cold Steve Austin had totally different gimmicks from the ones that turned them into legends. Some of these gimmicks are stuck decades in the past, so many pro wrestling fans likely haven't heard of someone like Terra Ryzing or Mean Mark Callous.

In fact, some wrestlers had two, three, four, or even more gimmicks before sticking with the name that wrestling fans recognize. Some of those past gimmicks were pretty cool, but others were a bit absurd.

8 The Undertaker As Master Of Pain

The Undertaker has been one of the most important wrestlers in WWE history. He is a true icon of wrestling and is someone who gave everything to the industry. Before being known as Undertaker, Mark William Calaway had many gimmicks, including Texas Red, Punisher, Mean Mark, Commando, and The Master Of Pain.

He used these gimmicks in his pre-WWE career, when he spent some years going through New Japan Pro Wrestling, United States Wrestling Alliance, and National Wrestling Alliance.

7 John Cena As Prototype

John Cena as Prototype

John Cena made his WWE debut as Prototype, a gimmick with which he had achieved glory in Ohio Valley Wrestling, eventually winning the championship. However, months later, the legendary gimmick of John Cena (which is his real name) would arrive. Cena would tweak his gimmick throughout the years, going from rapper to role model.

The truth is that John Cena's name will never be forgotten because he became one of the most successful wrestlers in history. “The Doctor Of Thuganomics” is a living legend.

6 Triple H As Terra Ryzing

In the early steps of his professional career, Paul Michael Levesque competed as Terra Ryzing, he had 10 wins, three losses, and a draw with that gimmick. Some months later, he changed his stage name to Hunter Hearst Helmsley, kept it for a while until finally, he changed his gimmick to Triple H.

Triple H represents a historic gimmick for the industry since this guy is one of the people who has been most committed to WWE, working for the benefit of the company for more than 25 years.

5 Edge As Sexton Hardcastle

Edge

Edge, another wrestler who quickly became very popular, was characterized by his ferocity in the ring and his excellent performances.

He first appeared in the company as Sexton Hardcastle, later he wrestled some matches as Adam Copeland before adopting the name Edge, with which he worked throughout this century, building a very good reputation. Edge became a legendary figure before announcing his retirement from wrestling in 2011 due to injuries. However, this year, he returned to the ring to the delight of wrestling fans worldwide.

4 Randy Savage As Mr. Madness

Randy Savage

The legendary Macho Man, a wrestler who is difficult to forget, was one of the best wrestlers ever, without a doubt. Randy Savage was not always Randy Savage, that is, he used other gimmicks too. He used to be called Spider, Randy Poffo, Destroyer, and Mr. Madness.

Pretty cool gimmicks actually, but the best one is Randy Savage, the name that gave him the status of superstar and, beyond that, it was a perfect gimmick for him because Randy was actually a savage wrestler. Macho Man was amazing.

3 Steve Austin As The Ringmaster

Stone Cold Steve Austin had many mind-blowing moments in the industry. In his prime, he probably was the most lethal wrestler in the WWF/WWE.

He was also known as Stunning Steve Austin and The Ringmaster, but none of those gimmicks lasted long. Aside from being a lackey of Ted DiBiase and being a really good wrestler, there was nothing to this gimmick. Obviously, Steve Austin as Stone Cold was a gimmick that made this man a legend.

2 Batista As Leviathan

"The Animal" was known as Leviathan and Khan before fighting under the name Batista. The first gimmick he used was Khan at World Xtreme Wrestling. Later, he used the name Leviathan, with which he won the OVW Heavyweight Title in 2001.

It was when he came to WWE that he started using the Batista gimmick that everyone knows him by. Leviathan and Khan weren't great gimmicks at all, whereas as Batista, he was able to ascend to the very top of the pro wrestling ladder.

1 Kane As Isaac Yankem DDS

Glenn Jacobs had a lot of gimmicks before he became Kane, as he used to be called Spartacus, Christmas Creature, Unabomb, Diesel, among other gimmicks. But the gimmick that stands out the most is Isaac Yankem DDS, the name with which he debuted in the World Wrestling Federation in 1995.

That character was totally different from the Kane we know today. The truth is that it did not have the expected success, it was not very flashy and it was not anything special either. You could say that changing the gimmick to Kane was the best thing he has done in his career.
