The Rock Vs. John Cena II & 9 Other WWE Rematches Nobody Wanted To See

Writer Isabella Bartlett

Wrestling rematches that WWE has produced over the years have generally been memorable encounters. The series of matches between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker in back-to-back WrestleMania's in 2009 and 2010, and Steve Austin's trilogy with Bret Hart were brilliant matches that fans still look back on fondly.

However, not every rematch is great and the second time around the match has failed to live up to the hype. In some rivalries, there have been a series of matches that have been dreadful right from the start, and fans are not enthused to see a rematch. Sometimes it's hard to top the original, and there have been many occasions where the rematch has been downright disappointing.

10 Mark Henry Vs. Ryback - Survivor Series 2013

Mark Henry and Ryback stunk out the joint in a dreadful match at WrestleMania 29, and Ryback issued an open challenge at Survivor Series 2013. It ended up being the World's Strongest Man who answered the challenge, and the match was another underwhelming encounter between the pair.

This time Ryback was the heel, and Henry was a face. Henry prevailed at WrestleMania, and at Survivor Series, the result remained the same as Henry finished off Ryback with his patented World's Strongest Slam.

9 Seth Rollins Vs. Baron Corbin - Stomping Grounds 2019

In the summer of 2019, Seth Rollins engaged in a poor Universal Championship feud with Baron Corbin. Their chemistry never clicked which is why their in-ring bouts were forgettable. Rollins defeated Corbin at Super ShowDown and their rematch at Stomping Grounds was atrocious.

Corbin handpicked Lacey Evans to be the special guest referee in their No Count-Out, No Disqualification match with the Universal Title once again at stake. Evans and Corbin's conniving plans failed with Rollins managing to keep a hold of the Universal Title.

8 Alberto Del Rio Vs. Jack Swagger - Extreme Rules 2013

At WrestleMania 29, Alberto Del Rio overcame a rejuvenated Jack Swagger to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. 24 hours later, Del Rio dropped the gold to Dolph Ziggler in a Money in the Bank cash-in. Nonetheless, Del Rio and Swagger continued their rivalry, and they battled in a number one contender's "I Quit" match at Extreme Rules 2013.

Ziggler had a concussion which stopped their triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Title from happening. Del Rio and Swagger's match at WrestleMania 29 was decent and their "I Quit" match was average but fans were not bothered in the slightest to see them battle again.

7 Triple H Vs. Scott Steiner - No Way Out 2003

Scott Steiner returned to WWE in late 2002, and it's safe to say that his run was lackluster. He immediately feuded with Triple H over the World Heavyweight Championship. Their title match at the 2003 Royal Rumble was poor, and there was an inevitable rematch with Big Poppa Pump as he beat Triple H by disqualification.

At No Way Out 2003, fans were subjected to another underwhelming title bout between the pair. There was repeated interference from Randy Orton and Ric Flair who played a pivotal role in Triple H's successful title defense. Ultimately, Triple H's trademark Pedigree was enough to end their rivalry.

6 Jerry Lawler Vs. Michael Cole - Over The Limit 2011

Jerry "The King" Lawler finally had his first match at WrestleMania when he battled with his broadcast colleague Michael Cole at WrestleMania 27. Lawler dominated the match and he initially won the match but the Anonymous Raw General Manager overturned the result.

Their feud came to a halt at Over the Limit 2011 as they squared off in a Kiss My Foot match. Lawler gave Cole his comeuppance but whilst it was hilarious, it wasn't a match that fans were too excited to see. Bret Hart applied the Sharpshooter on Cole with Cole helpless and he was forced to kiss The King's foot.

5 The Rock Vs. Hulk Hogan - No Way Out 2003

Fans fondly recall The Rock and Hulk Hogan's barnburner of a match at WrestleMania 18 which should have gone on last but didn't. 11 months later, Rock and Hogan locked horns at No Way Out 2003 in the main event with the People's Champion portraying a heel this time around.

Their bout happened in Canada, just like their WrestleMania 18 encounter but it was so much worse. Hogan lost a step inside the ring but Rock was still at the top of his game. Ultimately, it was always going to be hard to replicate their WrestleMania 18 bout but all thanks to interference from Mr. McMahon, The Rock bested Hogan once more.

4 Becky Lynch Vs. Lacey Evans - Stomping Grounds 2019

Becky Lynch is the longest-reigning Raw Women's Champion in WWE history but arguably the worst feud of her record-setting Raw Women's Championship reign was against Lacey Evans. Lynch pulled double duty at Money in the Bank 2019, and she retained her Raw Women's Title over Evans in a dire match.

A month later, they engaged in a rematch at Stomping Grounds 2019 with Lynch putting her title on the line. For sure, it was better than their Money in the Bank contest but no one believed that Evans was going to unseat the Man for the Raw Women's Championship.

3 The Rock Vs. John Cena - WrestleMania 29The Rock v John Cena WrestleMania 29 Cropped

The Rock beat John Cena in front of his hometown fans in Miami, Florida at WrestleMania 28 which was billed as "Once in a Lifetime." However, it was so obvious that Rock and Cena's rivalry did not finish there as they headlined WrestleMania for the second year running at WrestleMania 29.

This time Rock's WWE Championship was on the line with Cena out for revenge. The problem with the match is that the outcome was predictable as Big Match John was going to recapture the WWE Title. It wasn't necessarily a bad match but it wasn't as good as their match a year prior. Rock tore his adductor, and Cena got his WWE Championship back.

2 Brock Lesnar Vs. Roman Reigns - The Greatest Royal Rumble 2018

Fans became sick and tired of Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns' matches because they became formulaic and quite predictable. Lesnar retained the Universal Championship in one of the worst main events in the history of WrestleMania at WrestleMania 34 and Reigns took a beating in that match which led him to shed blood.

Weeks later, they had another Universal Title match but this time it was in the confines of a steel cage at The Greatest Royal Rumble 2018 that emanated from Saudi Arabia. Their match was decent but Lesnar came out on top again despite the Big Dog being close to winning the championship.

1 Randy Orton Vs. John Cena - Royal Rumble 2014

The feud between Randy Orton and John Cena had run its course by 2014 but they still managed to compete in the latter stages of events with the WWE Championship, the focal point in their matches. The Viper bested Cena in a TLC match at TLC 2013 to unify the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships.

Their rematch at Royal Rumble 2014 was a borefest, and fans had banter with Orton who reacted to their jibes. There was a big match feel to their matches as always but with some assistance from the Wyatt Family, Orton finished off Cena with his patented RKO to continue his reign as WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
