The Cast of YouTube Comedy Group Smosh, Ranked By Comic Abilities

Writer Liam Parker

Smosh has been around for two decades and has made efforts to stay relevant with new formats, but some of its members are more gifted than others.

Even after 19 years on the YouTube circuit, comedy group Smosh is going strong. The channel has expanded rather smartly with squad vlogs and a gaming channel on YouTube and Twitch, so it has been able to keep itself relevant. There's also diversity in content and a balanced amount of scripted sketches and improv-led segments. Smosh has been lucky with its new batch of comedians like Kimmy Jimenez, Tommy Bowie, and Jacklyn Uweh, who have been able to make the most of their personal brand of comedy.

Some OG members like Courtney Miller or Noah Grossman, however, need more room to showcase their comedic strengths. Some cast members have obviously emerged as funnier than their colleagues. Since Smosh is primary a comedy channel (even their board game segments or quizzes rely on the improv prowess of the cast to some extent), it's important to take stock of the better performers:

10 Olivia Sui

To be fair, Olivia is incredibly witty and knows how to make fun of herself. She has often outshone other castmates in scripted sketches and her unpredictable humor is refreshing. But it's obvious that she hasn't explored her full potential at Smosh, be it in improv segments or ensemble sketches.

Olivia excels in solo skits where she gets to expand upon her personal comic timing and it's clear that she has stand-up comedy potential. The I Have IBS sketch, for instance, is one of the better Smosh sketches because Olivia works with the kind of understated comedy that comes naturally to her. While it's clear that she brings a distinct quirkiness to the group, Smosh's scripts have overlooked her abilities.

9 Noah Grossman

Noah is an intelligent performer and though he usually understands what a scene needs, his comedy often falls flat (usually because the scene hasn't been scripted right). One key problem with Smosh is that the group sketches are often too loud or exaggerated when most of the comedians at Smosh excel at grounded, understated comedy.

While Noah has tremendous comic potential, he hasn't really figured out his own brand of humor at Smosh. Of course, the cast needs to show their versatility but it's unclear why Noah hasn't been given the room to explore the kind of comedy that he's really good at. Like Olivia, Noah too does really well in skits that have been written with him in mind. A good example is the 30-year-old gets canceled on Tik Tok sketch.

8 Courtney Miller

Courtney is a fixture at improv segments like Try Not To Laugh or even Eat it or Yeet it. She's a good actor and has an easy chemistry with every cast member which is why she's great at moderating the Eat it or Yeet it episodes. She also directs sketches for Smosh, so she has a good idea about what a scene needs. However, she definitely has a lot of solo potential.

Her original character Brianna Boho is one of the most engaging characters on the show. In TNTL or in certain Smosh Pit segments, Courtney doesn't come across as one of the best, which is a shame because she's a seasoned performer and has proved her mettle many times. Even in sketches that are channeled around her, like 'Courtney interviews her exes' or 'Courtney's Boyfriend Reveal,' she did not get a script that could show her strengths.

7 Kimmy Jimenez

Kimmy is one of the few cast members who seems to have figured out what works for her, which is surprising considering she has only been a part of the group for a little over three years. She's quick-witted and isn't too inhibited as a comedian, which has helped her in the improv segments at Smosh (which can otherwise often get a little boring).

This also helped her become a fan favorite in a short time. But like several Smosh members, Kimmy also suffers to find her comic footing in the scripted sketches (especially where cast members play themselves).

6 Keith Leak Jr.

Keith is perhaps the most versatile performer at Smosh and has delivered at almost every sketch he has ever been a part of. He doesn't always have to try too hard to be funny, which really helps him in TNTL. Keith is uninhibited and experimental as a performer and has undergone a significant improvement as a cast member.

He also knows how to hold his own in an ensemble sketch and has been lucky enough to be in a few well-scripted skits as well as some well-executed improv episodes. He definitely needs more solo sketches that let him explore more comic routes.

5 Ian Hecox

Almost two decades ago, Smosh was started by Ian and co-creator Anthony Padilla, so Ian is the only one who's been a part of the group from scratch. And though very few YouTube comedy groups have lasted so long, doing what Smosh does, it still needs more breakthroughs when it comes to the kind of comedy they are offering.

Ian knows his strengths as a comedian and is also not afraid to explore newer avenues. He balances both exaggerated and muted humor scenes effortlessly and can engage audiences with his self-aware comedy.

4 Tommy Bowe

Tommy has been a breath of fresh air and is a talented performer. Unlike some cast members, he has learned how to take improv-related challenges in his stride, which makes him so great at TNTL.

Tommy is also creative with his ideas and has definitely pushed the envelope quite a bit pertaining to the comic content. He's a quick thinker and is also great at breaking a joke. He could definitely use more solo sketches and semi-improv segments that give him room to explore.

3 Damien Haas

Damien's wholesome, relatable vibe has made him a big favorite with the fans. His friendship with Shayne is also a big USP considering fans love seeing them together. Damien is multi-faceted and brave enough to explore his strengths which really shows.

He's come a long way since he first started because he has been able to identify what helps his comedy in an ensemble set-up. He's one of the most consistent performers on TNTL. His wacky but grounded energy makes him a great asset to the team.

2 Jacklyn Uweh

Jackie has been able to find her footing in the group pretty early on and also knows how to hold on to her personal brand of comedy which is a huge plus. Smosh clearly needs to figure out how to give the comedians their own space to shine. So, instead of writing them into sketches, the skits need to be designed to highlight their comic potential.

The newer crop of performers like Tommy, Kimmy, and Jackie has been smart about channeling their best aspects. In Jackie's case, she has been able to prove her mettle early on in scripted skits as well as in improv and her relatable energy was a big plus.

1 Shayne Topp

Shayne has emerged as the most popular Smosh member and with good reason. As a comedian, Shayne is surprisingly sensitive and aware, though he's often mocked as the loud, screaming one. He knows how to use physical comedy and not go overboard with it.

He is also one of the cast members who has come up with characters that have stuck, be it Courtney Fricking Miller or Dumpster Wizard. His TNTL ideas are especially bright and unconventional which also makes him the one to watch out for in almost every episode.
