Ted Lasso: What Did Rupert Say To Nate?
Owen Barnes
Rebecca's ex-husband Rupert has a curious moment with Nate in Ted Lasso season 2, episode 10. But what did AFC Richmond's former owner actually say?
Ted Lasso season 2, episode 10 features a curious shot of Rebecca’s ex-husband, Rupert, whispering something unheard to Nate. Rupert has been positioned as a cold and heartless villain since the start of season 1, and the show hasn’t given any reason to think that that will change. So why would Rupert want to talk to Nate, and what could he possibly have said to AFC Richmond’s assistant coach?
To be fair, Nate’s already had more than a few villainous-leaning moments in Ted Lasso season 2. His promotion to coach and subsequent arrival in the sports media spotlight has been an interesting process to say the least, and he’s occasionally used his newfound power in unfortunate ways. He’s been crass and rude to Colin and other AFC Richmond players, he’s repeatedly insulted and demeaned Will, the new Kit Man, and he seems to always be obsessing over accruing more fame and perceived importance. Nate’s been a clear asset to the team, and he’s helped score some big wins, but his worse instincts have gotten the better of him more often than not in Ted Lasso season 2.
None of that explains why Rupert would have gone out of his way to speak to Nate, however. Presumably, AFC Richmond’s former owner is trying to use Nate – someone he sees as weak and easily manipulatable – to sabotage the team, and thereby further damage Rebecca’s reputation. Nate appears to respond positively to whatever it is that Rupert tells him, leading to one theory that Rupert is intending to buy a new football club and attempting to poach Nate from Richmond to be a part of it. Given how quickly Nate’s ego has grown, that seems like the kind of offer he might not be able to refuse, especially if Rupert promises him more authority.
Another theory, which seems less likely, but still possible, is that Nate has been working as a mole for Rupert for some time. His clear dedication to the success of AFC Richmond makes it seem impossible that he’d be enacting any kind of real sabotage, but he could be getting paid to keep Rupert informed on what’s going on within the locker room. Nate has made snide comments in the past about how much different people in the organization get paid, so it’s reasonable to think he might jump at the chance to make a little extra money – money he clearly believes he is due.
For now, whatever Rupert said to Nate will remain a mystery, but it seems apparent that whatever it is, it won’t be good for Ted, Rebecca, or AFC Richmond as a whole. Nate’s seemed like something of a powder keg all season, and Rupert’s encouragements toward the dark side could be all that’s needed to set him off. Only two episodes remain in Ted Lasso season 2, and it looks like some big things may still be happening before it’s over.
