[Report] Backstage Details On Plans WWE Had For Edge Prior To Injury At Backlash

Writer Michael Hansen

Before his Backlash match with Randy Orton was aired, it was reported that Edge suffered a triceps injury that will keep him out for several months.

The Rated-R superstar reportedly suffered the injury during filming for "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever," which ended in a pinfall victory for Orton. Reports suggest he will be sidelined for four to eight months.

The win for Orton notted the series at one apiece; Edge defeated his former Rated-RKO member at WrestleMania 36, which marked his first singles match in nine years. And it sounds like WWE was indeed considering a rubber match.

According to Paul Davis of WrestlingNews.co, Edge was scheduled to participate at the SummerSlam pay-per-view in two months. Davis added "there was talk that he would wrestle Randy Orton in one final match" at the event, but that won't be the case now.

On top of that, Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Ringside News) explained that Edge's WWE contract has him for five matches, although he heard "it's more than five." With Edge now sidelined for a long period, it's likely going to be fewer than five matches.

With Edge injured, WWE will have to try to get by without yet another major superstar. Becky Lynch announced her pregnancy last month, and she'll be out of action for a long period. "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt is on paternity leave, and Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn are staying home amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Losing Edge for SummerSlam is a big blow to WWE, and the creative team will have to prepare for some major shake-ups to their initial plans. It'll be interesting to see what they manage to come up with.

WWE Has To Do The Rubber Match When Edge Returns

Edge will be sidelined long-term, but this shouldn't stop WWE from doing a rubber match for him and Orton. The timing may not be ideal, but the two superstars delivered a pair of intense and grade-A matches. There has to be a proper conclusion to this feud, so let's hope that WWE runs the rubber match once Edge is cleared for a return.
