Queen Of Hearts Explains How She Pulled Off Singing French

Queen of Hearts, the latest winner of The Masked Singer, talks about singing in French. She also discusses her behind the scenes experience.
The Masked Singer has crowned the winner of season 6. Queen of Hearts, who turned out to be Grammy-nominated singer Jewel, won the Group A finals two episodes ago then beat the Group B winner, Bull, in the grand finale. Bull was revealed to be former American Idol contestant Todrick Hall. Long before the season finale, fans correctly speculated that the two finalists were in fact Jewel and Todrick. Before Queen of Hearts was unmasked, three out of the four panelists correctly guessed her identity. Ken thought she was Oscar-winning actress Renée Zellweger.
For the first time on The Masked Singer, panelist Nicole Scherzinger was the recipient of the Golden Ear Trophy. She correctly guessed Queen of Hearts' identity, as well as runner-up Bull's identity, giving her a total of three golden ear points this season. While Nicole instantly knew who was wearing the Queen of Hearts costume, Jewel definitely threw viewers and the panelists off on several occasions. For instance, earlier this season, Queen of Hearts stood out by singing an entire song in French. Her rendition of Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose" was one of her most memorable performances.
Jewel gave EW some insight into what went into her rendition of "La Vie En Rose." Her first challenge was learning a song entirely in French, which she said she doesn't speak. Then, since she couldn't use a teleprompter, she had to find another way to remember the foreign lyrics. "...I actually spoke the French onto a track that I had in my in-ears. I had a track speaking the French, and then I would hear it and be able to sing it in time. It was very strange to do. If people could have heard what was happening in my ears, it was very off-putting, but I got through it!"
Jewel also gave a particular reason why she appreciated the opportunity to take part in The Masked Singer. "The industry is not very kind to moms, mainly just because of the lifestyle." She went on to explain how the show filming schedule enabled her to balance work with being a mother. "...Obviously my goal was to be a great, engaged, present mom, but I am also an artist. And so finding opportunities that allow you to be an artist that don't take all your time, to help you promote your music, and help you develop as an artist in ways you haven't done before, that's really valuable." Jewel emphasized that working on the show didn't take very long, and also said that she enjoyed being able to show off her vocal abilities.
Winning The Masked Singer takes more than just a great voice. In some seasons, the winner stood out more as an entertainer (e.g., Season 2's Wayne Brady, aka The Fox). Dancing, having stage presence, and a big personality were often what led a contestant to victory. But Queen of Hearts stood out more because of her vocal ability. She took on something different every time she hit the stage. Singing in French, while not even being fluent in the language, was certainly a standout moment for Jewel.
