Nancy Benoit's Woman Character Is One Of the Most Under-Appreciated In Wrestling

Writer Michael Hansen

As the women of the wrestling world constantly ramp up their devotion and skill to show they’re just as talented if not more so than the men on the card, fans should look to the past to see there were plenty of monumental and influential females long before the current crop started blasting through barriers. She never even worked a day in the WWE.

Nancy Toffoloni was working as a model and a customer service agent for an insurance company, she was suggested to photographer George Napolitano for a cover girl for one of his wrestling magazines. During the photoshoot, she met the devil himself, Kevin Sullivan. She was part of the wrestling business ever since. First as his valet, then as his wife and later on one of the most beautiful and toughest managers of the late eighties and early nineties.

The Fallen Angel

When Toffoloni made her debut in Florida Championship Wrestling, she was immediately paired up with Kevin Sullivan and his group of satanists. Becoming The Fallen Angel, she would paint her face up and use her allure to help Sullivan wrangle in more followers, like Luna Vachon. In 1987, the promotion got sold to Crockett, giving the future Taskmaster the opportunity to work for JCP and the NWA. Two years later, Mrs. Sullivan followed the devil on down to Georgia.

The Bringer Of Doom

Now working for a national promotion, Sullivan knew full well he couldn’t immediately or directly reference the devil gimmick. Instead, he aligned himself with the likes of Iron Mike Rotunda and Rick Steiner as the Varsity Club. Rick would eventually break off from the team and start teaming up with his little brother, Scott. It was during this time that a rabid fan would cheer wildly for the Dog Face Gremlin, and the Steiner’s manager Missy Hyatt was growing ever more suspicious about the little waify girl who keep growing increasingly more alluring in her look. She even cost The Steiners tag team titles by “inadvertently” tripping Scott.

If it was hard to believe that the vivacious Robin Green could be a fan of the dimwitted Rick Steiner, it’s because in reality, Green was aligned with Sullivan the whole time. She made her debut, turned on Steiner and eventually began to call herself Woman. As Woman, Nancy brought forth one of the biggest and most terrifying tag teams the NWA and WCW had ever seen. Under hoods, Doom debuted and were able to defeat the mighty Steiner Brothers by putting a foreign object underneath one of their masks for the knockout blow. While the team was gaining traction, Woman was gaining even more and ended up leaving her men high and dry to begin managing The Four Horsemen before leaving for ECW.

Hot Angles In ECW And WCW

Woman And The Sandman Cropped

Shortly after leaving WCW, Woman and Kevin Sullivan both found themselves in ECW. But it wasn’t long before she started managing The Sandman during one of the hottest angles in ECW history. She would drive a wedge between Sandman and his real-life wife Peaches in order to start managing the Hardcore Icon. During an incident with Tommy Dreamer, Sandman was “blinded,” and Woman left him because he was useless. It was one of the first times that both heels and babyfaces acted horrified at Dreamer’s actions to help sell the realism. But it was all a ruse to do further damage to Dreamer and set up the Singapore Cane match that helped finally get Dreamer over with the bloodthirsty ECW faithful.

Return To The Horsemen

Woman Debra And Miss Elizabeth Cropped

Woman would make her grand return to WCW on Nitro in early 1996, seemingly at the side of The Macho Man. That alliance lasted less time than it takes to sneeze and Woman was once again aligned with not just The Four Horseman, but teaching Miss Elizabeth how to be at the beck and call of The Nature Boy. This would lead into a few more hot angles, this time with her at the center of them and involving fellow valet Debra and later her husband, Kevin Sullivan.

Without ever working a single match on TV, Woman became an icon of the valets that peppered the business during the late eighties and nineties. Her friends in the business like Chris Jericho have often referred to as one of the toughest girls in the business and she certainly was presented as the leader of nearly every group she was a part of.

While Sunny and Sable provided the template for WWE Divas, Woman provided the template for how to be a tough-as-nails femme fatale in the industry, which is a gimmick that was money then and could still make money now.
