Legendary Chiefs Linebacker Set To Retire

Writer Michael Hansen

Since 2006, former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali terrorized the opposition with his hard hits and superb tackling, but it looks like the end has come for the five-time Pro Bowler.

Appearing on Sirius XM NFL Radio (h/t Josh alper of Pro Football Talk), Hali explained that he's lost the desire to keep playing and wants to spend more time with his four children. As such, the Chiefs legend may be ready to hang up the cleats.

"I just need to continue to work out and do my music. I don’t want to focus too much on football. I don’t see myself getting back into football," Hali said. "I see myself being involved with the Chiefs somehow, maybe as a specialist being able to teach the guys. I don’t want to lie to myself. I think the time has come."

On top of that, Hali was asked about continuing his career, given that with 89.5 career sacks, he is getting close to 100. But Hali replied that he was simply happy he gave his "best" and "all," so the chance to reach 100 sacks may not be enough to bring him back.

Drafted by the Chiefs with the 20th pick in 2006, Hali became one of the NFL's most dominant linebackers and feared pass-rushers. Besides the 89.5 sacks, he also racked up 33 career forced fumbles.

But Hali was limited to five games in 2017, due to an undisclosed injury. Following the Chiefs' shocking loss to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Wild Card Round, Hali was released as the team began to reshape its defense.

A key piece of the Chiefs defense for 12 years, Hali led Kansas City to six playoff appearances - including the AFC Divisional Rounds in 2015 and 2016. The franchise has enjoyed one of its greatest runs in history, and they're still primed to contend for more Super Bowls.

If Hali does retire and opts to remain with the organization, he'll certainly have a chance to capture that elusive Championship ring with the team he helped build up into a contender.
