One of the most important rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s, the Who, is led by him and features him as a guitarist, lead singer, principal songwriter, and co-founder. Roger Daltrey was the leader of the skiffle/rock and roll group Entwistle joined in late 1961.

Over a hundred songs have been written by Townshend for the Who's twelve studio albums. These include concept albums, Tommy and Quadrophenia, the rock operas, and Who's Next, a mainstay of mainstream rock radio. In addition, he has composed over a hundred songs for his solo albums, radio jingles, and TV theme tunes. Townshend was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 as a member of the Who.

He also won the Brit Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1983. He was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Townshend plays keyboards, banjo, accordion, harmonica, ukulele, mandolin, violin, synthesiser, bass guitar, and drums in addition to his primary instrument of choice, the guitar.
