How A Joke Faction Became An Iconic Meme In WWE

Writer Isabella Bartlett

Heath Slater, Drew McIntyre, and Jinder Mahal were once involved in one of the most comedic trios in WWE of the past decade, as they were collectively known as 3MB. As Heath Slater has been involved with many factions throughout his career in WWE, from the main-event level act like The Nexus to a lower-card group like The Social Outcasts, 3MB stands out as one of the most noted factions in his career. Though 3MB was considered a joke, one can't deny that this specific faction has contributed to bringing entertaining content to WWE programming during the group's existence. 3MB, in their credit, has become a remembered act in wrestling history, as they've arguably become an iconic meme for many wrestling fans.

Heath Slater's Comedic Rising

Heath Slater was a ten-year veteran in WWE, as one may argue that he could be worthy of a Hall of Fame induction due to his comedic potential, much like R-Truth. However, Heath Slater wasn't always perceived as a comedic performer, considering he was once associated with The Nexus, which ran rough-shot on the Raw brand in 2010. At one point, Heath Slater was part of one of the biggest heel acts in the wrestling industry in 2010, as some wrestling fans may have difficulties seeing him in that light.

Drew McIntyre as part of 3MB

However, after The Nexus ran its course, Heath Slater associated with The Corre and achieved little to no success. After that faction dissolved, he received a solo run on the Smackdown in 2011 after spending a year on the main roster. The problem was that Heath Slater wasn't given any material from WWE creative booking that made him out to be taken seriously as a solo performer. Heath Slater mainly resorted to becoming a lower-to-mid card act on Smackdown, which he would lose on many occasions. However, rather than becoming an irrelevant figure in WWE from losing all the time, losing worked to his advantage.

Heath Slater then used his "One-Man-Band" persona as a comedy character as he became more featured on WWE programming. In the Summer of 2012, Heath Slater had a prominent role leading to the highly-anticipated Raw 1000 episode as he got constantly beaten by past wrestling legends. It was the peak of his comedic "One-Man-Band" persona.

Formation Of 3MB

In the Fall of 2012, as Heath Slater continued his comedic heel act, Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal interfered in one of his matches on an episode of Smackdown, thus forming the three-man band or 3MB. Both Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal took the same persona as Heath Slater, except Heath Slater had the lead role of the 3MB faction.

One should keep in mind that Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal at this time weren't involved with anything of importance, so becoming a part of Heath Slater was arguably a step-up for both men. Even if 3MB were mainly a lower-to-mid card act on WWE programming and had little to no credibility, it's better than having little to no credibility and not being on the show.

Losing Becomes Beneficial For 3MB

While 3MB won some matches throughout the next few months since their formation against lower-card talents, the faction itself achieved little to no success as a trio. Because of this, one would assume that 3MB would become irrelevant since they went to achieved little success.

That sentiment would be the furthest thing from the truth. Just because 3MB didn't go on to win any championships as a unit, that doesn't mean they weren't an integral part of WWE. 3MB losing and having babyface wrestlers constantly get the best of them was part of the charm of this group. Unlike certain other factions like The Corre, who lost a lot of matches despite being presented as a dominant force, WWE fans knew 3MB wasn't going to achieve much considering Heath Slater's wacky persona.

As part of 3MB's appeal of getting bested by much better wrestlers, one can look back at all the times 3MB got attacked by The Shield, as they had no chance of being on par with them in a fight. One can also look back at the time when all three men were jumped by Brock Lesnar all at once, which was a fight that they had no chance of winning.

Sometimes heel characters that lose all the time can be beneficial. Superstars like Santino Marella and Curt Hawkins have lost many matches in their careers but have found ways to be on WWE TV and are remembered fondly for providing comedic entertainment.

One must remember that WWE is a sports entertainment company that thrives off of characters that are entertaining in some way, shape, or form. Just because certain superstars don't win any matches, it doesn't mean they don't fit the criteria of what makes a sports entertainer.

3MB deserves the credit for being a remembered comedy act in the wrestling industry. Although someone like Drew McIntyre has moved on to bigger things, a faction like 3MB being an iconic meme is cherished no matter what.
