Has AEW Dropped The Ball With The Promising Tag Team

Writer Liam Parker

AEW's Private Party was one of the most exciting tag teams on the roster when AEW first began, yet down the line the duo has seriously fallen off in terms of momentum.

Private Party Had A Great Start In AEW

From the start, AEW made it clear that tag team wrestling was going to play a major focus in everything that the company did. This made sure Private Party had momentum with their exciting speed and agility making them eye-catching to watch.

Right from the start, the tag team was a big part of the division and they pulled off a huge shock when defeating The Young Bucks in the first round of the inaugural AEW Tag Team Championship tournament.

The victory against the top team in the company was something that immediately drew the eyes on Isiah Kassidy and Marq Queen. While they didn't win the tournament, the team was certainly an exciting one that people had realistic expectations for.

They would continue to impress early on, coming up short in a couple of AEW Tag Team Championship matches, but then the duo really fell off. Their momentum stopped and as more top tag teams were brought in and other factions were created, Private Party were forgotten.

There's Been A Lack Of Opportunities

PRIVATE PARTY

The problem that they've had is there has been a real lack of opportunities for them. While they had shots for the Tag Team Titles, there was never really any massive investment of story to build them up as serious contenders.

They haven't competed on the big PPV events and been seen as talents that could hold the gold in the same way as FTR or Jurassic Express, which is a real shame. They're naturally charismatic in and out of the ring and that should have made them perfect for this division.

Inside the ring, there's nothing they can't do as a pair. Whether it be high-flying action, technical work, or breathtaking double teams, they get the crowd excited and they deserved more attention than they got.

However, other teams were prioritized ahead of them which wasn't what anybody truly wanted to see. After such a red hot start, this was a duo that AEW truly let down with bad booking decisions.

Can Matt Hardy Save Them?

AEW's answer to getting the focus back on Private Party was putting them with Matt Hardy. Having the wrestling legend and tag team expert manage the duo made sense on paper as it seemed like a good fit for all three.

Hardy coming to the end of his career offering wisdom to two future stars is a good idea, but turning Private Party heel to make it work is where there have been teething problems. Matt's money-making gimmick is one that he thrives in, and it has truly saved his individual AEW career and made him far more interesting.

However, Private Party felt like natural babyfaces. The energy, the screaming in the ring, and the way they work lend themselves to making them people fans should want to cheer for. But, after a period of adjustment, there's no denying that the heel version of the tag team has started to click as well.

They've managed to master the dark arts and been fantastic at creating cheap shorts in order to get help Matt and themselves thrive. Once again, the tag team has become interesting and engaging and it feels like AEW has prospects on their hands once more.

Now things are all clicking, Tony Khan and his booking team have the chance to save Private Party, stopping them from becoming a forgotten duo and making them a true force to be reckoned with once again.

Matt Hardy and Private Party appear in Impact

The obstacle that AEW now must overcome is ensuring they feel dominant. They have been hot and cold with their push, from appearing on Impact and teasing some crossover opportunities, to then never turning up on the show again.

They're often booked as two people to be beaten up in order to protect Matt, and while he still has plenty to offer, at this stage in his career that isn't the way that things should be. It's time to step up and make Private Party the stars of this group and not drop the ball with two of the most gifted athletes in the company once again.
