Is The Guest getting a sequel film? Here's what we know about The Guest 2's development, release date, and whether or not Dan Stevens will return.
Although The Guest did not receive a warm welcome at the box office in 2014, it has become a cult hit, and many are anxiously awaiting The Guest 2. Director Adam Wingard has teased ideas and information that could lead toward a follow-up to The Guest and delve deeper into the story of the Terminator-like character David (Dan Stevens). Given The Guest’s positive reception regarding its direction, acting, and story, a sequel is more than warranted.
The Guest followed a soldier named David who visited the Peterson family in New Mexico, and he claimed to have been friends with their son, a recently deceased soldier. After David endeared himself to the family, the Peterson’s daughter Anna (Maika Monroe) discovered that David escaped a military experiment that turned soldiers into unstoppable killing machines. With his identity compromised, David began hunting down the Peterson family and anyone else who got in his way. After the Peterson children seemingly killed David, Anna looked on in confusion as David emerges relatively unscathed in The Guest's ending.
The Guest only made 2.7 million dollars back from its 5 million dollar budget, but has since garnered a reputation as one of the most creative thrillers to come out in recent years. The film’s director, Adam Wingard, and screenwriter Simon Barrett have been frequent collaborators on acclaimed cult films like You’re Next and A Horrible Way to Die. They have hinted at collaborating again on The Guest 2. Recently Wingard has opened up in interviews about everything he hopes will happen regarding The Guest 2, and how they might expand upon David’s story.
Will The Guest 2 Happen?
In April of 2022, Adam Wingard announced that he would be releasing an album through Lakeshore Records entitled The Guest 2. The album’s song titles and lyrics would hint at what would happen to David in the events following The Guest. In a recent interview, the director discussed (via Empire) further developing the sequel into an actual project with Simon Barrett as a limited series. Although nothing has been announced, Wingard and Barrett have been staying active in discussing The Guest 2 and ensuring it continues developing.
The Guest 2 Cast: Will Dan Stevens Return?
Dan Stevens was praised for his charming yet chilling portrayal of David in The Guest. During development, Wingard said that basically no other actor was even considered for the role. Recently, Wingard claimed Dan Stevens would love to do a sequel, so audiences can likely expect his return whenever The Guest 2 arrives. Since The Guest's release, Stevens has gone on to star in Disney's live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, and the Marvel FX series Legion.
The Guest 2 Story: What Will The Sequel Be About?
Wingard and Barrett revealed that developing The Guest 2 album has given them ideas to develop into a movie or limited series but have not specified what those ideas are. However, The Guest had many cliffhangers and unanswered questions that could be further explored in its sequel. The Guest 2 could pick up where its predecessor left off and show David continuing to hunt down Luke and Anna Peterson, or it could explain David’s secret government origins and relationship to the Peterson’s son.
The Guest 2 Release Date Prediction
There is no release date confirmed for The Guest 2, although with Wingard and Barrett writing and directing a ThunderCats reboot and a sequel to the Face/Off film, it may be a few years before The Guest 2 reaches audiences. However, with the release of The Guest 2 album and Wingard and Barrett continually talking about developing the project, audiences can be reassured that the creators don’t intend to forget the project any time soon. In the meantime, they will have to enjoy the original film The Guest and The Guest 2 soundtrack and keep an eye out for any announcements from Adam Wingard.
