Eight more Superstars were added to the Royal Rumble matches during the final SmackDown before the show.
It's almost WrestleMania season, but before that two-month stretch, WWE fans celebrate a time of year that is arguably even more exciting. I am, of course, talking about the build to Royal Rumble. Now that the new year has begun, the build to what are literally the biggest matches of the year can begin. 30 men and 30 women competing for a chance to be in a main event match at WrestleMania.
The Road To WrestleMania's Main Events
The definition of exactly what a WrestleMania main event is remains a topic that is hotly debated. Vince McMahon would famously tell Superstars that there was more than one main event at WrestleMania. CM Punk, in particular, is someone who takes issue with that definition. While McMahon would consider Punk's match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29 a main event, since it didn't close the show, The Second City Saint didn't agree.

There are quite literally multiple main events at WrestleMania nowadays since the show spans an entire weekend. That has sparked a new discussion over whether the match that closes night two is the true main event. In recent history, however, it could definitely be argued night one's main events have been the ones that have left longer lasting memories. The Undertaker's Boneyard Match and Stone Cold versus Kevin Owens are two examples that immediately spring to mind.
2023's Royal Rumble Matches
Back to this year, and those who will enter the men's and women's Royal Rumble matches probably aren't worried about where they will be on the WrestleMania card. Not yet at least. They have to navigate their way through the 30-person matches before that becomes a concern. Something that is easier said than done and despite the Rumble being an annual event since 1987, the group of wrestlers to have won the match is still a small and elite one.
Only 31 Superstars in WWE history can boast that they have won a Royal Rumble match. Despite competing in the match 14 times, the third most of anyone in history, Kofi Kingston has never won one. The first man to declare himself for the 2023 Rumble is synonymous with the match type, though. Kingston has pulled off some incredible feats to avoid elimination in the past, and fans will be expecting to see something equally as special from him at this year's Royal Rumble which goes down on Saturday, January 28, 2023.
Kingston might have been the first to declare for this year's matches, but he isn't the only entrant to have been announced. Everyone confirmed for this year's Royal Rumble matches can be found below.
