Edge's Return In WWE Is A Legend Comeback Done Right
Emma Terry
WWE Hall of Famer Edge has been on a roll for his entire second run in WWE. Since returning to the company in early 2020 as a surprised entrant in the Royal Rumble, Edge has become one of WWE's most valuable performers despite retiring for nearly a decade in 2011. For the two-and-a-half years since being back, Edge's had many classic bouts that even include wrestling at the main event of Wrestlemania 37. As he's currently leading a heel faction called Judgment Day, Edge's second run with WWE has exceeded expectations to where he's an example of a WWE legend return done right.
Edge Overcame Severe Injuries
When Edge retired from the ring in 2011, there was a consensus that he'd most likely never wrestle again due to suffering a career-ending neck injury. However, Edge overcame the odds against him and eventually got cleared to perform despite being in his late-40s.
Considering the severity of his career-ending injuries, Edge's comeback from massive adversity is one of the most inspiring events in modern professional wrestling. When one thinks of the perfect return of a beloved legend, it would involve something inspiring that one can learn from as a real-life experience. Edge's comeback from a life-threatening injury can't get more inspiring than that.
Edge's In-Ring Ability Keeps Up With The Best
Although not every match Edge has had in his second run has been great, it's worth mentioning the many classic bouts he's been a part of that fans remember. He's had thriller matches with many superstars, as Edge has proven that he can work with almost anyone in today's generation of WWE.
Who can forget his match with Randy Orton from Backlash 2020, considering one could make the argument that it was one of the best singles matches of his career. In the first year of Edge's second stint, he involved himself with a long-term program with Randy Orton, which resulted in numerous clashes due to their long history. Though their Last-Man-Standing at Wrestlemania 36 was highly-criticized, their anticipated rematch at Backlash 2020 was universally-acclaimed despite being held at the Performance Center.
Edge's in-ring work hasn't fallen behind regarding his ability to tell a story in the ring. His match with Randy Orton at Backlash 2020 was spectacular as both men engaged in unique storytelling that referenced past events. For someone with Edge's age and past injuries, no one expects him to pull off a risky stunt like falling off a ladder. It more has to do with being put in matches with current talent that he'd at least have to keep up in delivering quality matches. To Edge's credit, he's shown time and time again that he's capable of doing so and doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
Furthermore, he would later have a series of matches with World Champion Roman Reigns, as all bouts with each other were classics. His first match with Roman Reigns was at the main event of Wrestlemania 37 in a triple-threat match with Daniel Bryan, as Edge earned the right by winning the 2021 Royal Rumble match in a stellar performance. It's worth noting that this particular match got reviewed as one of the best Wrestlemania main events in a long time, as it received 4-and-a-half stars, according to the Wrestling Observer.
Later that year, Edge faced Roman Reigns again for the Universal Championship in a singles match at Money In The Bank 2021. Like his previous match with Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania, the rematch once again was praised by critics.
Despite wrestling a part-time schedule, Edge has been active throughout his second tenure in WWE, no matter which wrestler he's feuding. After his program with Roman Reigns, Edge went on to feud with Seth Rollins, to which the two have had a series of critically-acclaimed matches. An example of this would be the Hell in a Cell match Edge had with Seth Rollins at Crown Jewel 2021, which was arguably one of the best matches in WWE throughout 2021.

WWE's Handling Of Edge
For all the criticism they receive regarding their booking of veteran talents, WWE deserves their fair share of credit for their creative booking of Edge. Since his return, WWE has slotted him into the fold of talent they utilize as featured performers on their programming. A part-time wrestler like Edge, much like Brock Lesnar, is used throughout the year instead of exclusively being used for the yearly Wrestlemania PPV.

Considering that Edge's second run in the company is a massive deal due to his decade-long absence, WWE has continued to take advantage of that appealing aspect of Edge's return. And Edge himself has delivered on all aspects of being a compelling WWE superstar, from his in-ring work to his ability on the microphone. Now that he's refreshed his character by turning heel and leading the newly formed Judgement Day faction, Edge shows that he'll continue wrestling on his terms, with WWE getting it right regarding his booking. Specifically, his booking as a redeeming WWE legend that he was and still is.
