Summary

  • Peacock renewed Poker Face for a second season shortly after the conclusion of the first season, but details about season 2 are still a mystery.
  • Show creator Rian Johnson and star Natasha Lyonne have ideas for season 2, but they are keeping them secret, generating speculation and anticipation.
  • A season 2 premiere date is unknown, but there is enough known about the new season for viewers to be excited and speculate about the show's future.

Peacock renewed Poker Face within a month of season 1's conclusion in 2023, but there is still a lot of mystery surrounding Poker Face season 2 news. Created by Knives Out and Glass Onion writer and director Rian Johnson, Poker Face offered Natasha Lyonne the opportunity to work with a wide range of actors and storylines as the show’s mystery of the week format received widespread acclaim. The crime drama concluded its first season with Lyonne's Charlie Cale back on the run for an entirely new reason, an obvious setup for a thrill-packed Poker Face season 2. The specifics of what's next for walking lie-detector Charlie when Poker Face returns, however, remains to be seen.

Show creator Rian Johnson and star Natasha Lyonne both have ideas for where Poker Face will head in season 2, although what they are seems to be a closely guarded secret. With the season 1 finale setting up a second season just as full of twists and turns as the first, what could happen in the next season of Poker Face has caused a wild amount of speculation — and this has no doubt helped fuel the anticipation for Charlie Cale's return to the small screen whenever the next season of Poker Face arrives on Peacock. While a season 2 premiere date is still an unspecified way off, there's still enough known about the new season of Poker Face for viewers to digest in the meantime.

Poker Face Season 2 Latest News

The latest Poker Face season 2 news doesn't offer much insight into when to expect the show, but there are some intriguing aspects of what the second season could explore. In an interview with The Wrap carried before the SAG-AFTRA strike began, Natasha Lyonne teased a possible exploration of Charlie's lie detector gift in Poker Face. Interestingly, Lyonne suggested that it is not necessarily such a gift "My terror of a future is one in which we’d be able to have, like, a neuro link and we could read each other’s minds. No, no, no! The one gift we have is that we can’t actually know what the other person is thinking."

It is a very clever premise worth exploring in the show. While Poker Face received a lot of praise for sticking to its case-of-the-week format, not trying to change up its brilliant formula too much, Rian Johnson is too talented a writer and Lyonne is too talented an actor not to explore this idea in a deeper way. It could be worth showing how Charlie's abilities leave her living an isolated life, unable to get close to many people as she knows every time they tell her even a small white lie and they know they are unable to have secrets of their own.

Poker Face Season 2 Confirmed

Poker Face season 2 has been confirmed, with Peacock announcing the renewal shortly after the season 1 finale. Peacock hooked audiences on Poker Face by releasing four episodes in January 2023, with one more episode available each week leading up to its finale. After just six episodes of its 10-episode first season and a tease from a Peacock exec about Poker Face season 2, the continuation of the show was confirmed, and then it went on to finish off its standout debut season.

As one of Peacock’s most successful shows, Poker Face season 2 seemed like a forgone conclusion as long as Johnson and Lyonne had an interest in continuing. Johnson made it clear the duo are happy to move forward with more than just a second season. He told THR, “Natasha and I keep talking about getting old doing this. I can imagine her Jessica Fletcher-ing it. And I would be thrilled. … This is something that’s obviously built with an engine to keep on going."

Poker Face Season 2 Cast

With the wonderful lead performance and the exciting guest stars in each episode, the Poker Face cast will be one of the most intriguing aspects of the show's return. While Natasha Lyonne and Rhea Perlman should be considered locks for Poker Face season 2 given the events of the season 1 finale, any other potential additions remain up in the air. Poker Face’s story structure leads to very few series regulars, as Charlie pops in and out of the lives of a variety of characters. Among the characters who could return in Poker Face season 2, FBI agent Luke Clark (Simon Helberg) and Charlie's sister Emily Cale (Clea DuVall) may be seen again as Charlie seeks help while on the run.

Considering the rate of at least one death per episode, Poker Face will likely dip into Johnson and Lyonne’s connections throughout Hollywood to generate a season’s worth of guest stars for its second run. With a repeat of the Poker Face season 1 format receiving plenty of support, the anticipation of another long list of guest stars will lead to plenty of speculation.Poker Face fans have season 2 casting favorites, whether the actors play a murderer or a character who meets their end by accidentally crossing Charlie’s string of bad luck. Johnson could also dip into the ensemble casts of Knives Out or Glass Onion, as he has already said he wants Jamie Lee Curtis to appear in Poker Face season 2.

Poker Face Season 2 Story Details

The Poker Face season 2 story is sure to focus on Beatrix Hasp (Rhea Perlman) and her pursuit of Charlie, as the show makes clear in the Poker Face season 1 finale. Having escaped Cliff LeGrand (Benjamin Bratt), who is headed to jail after murdering Sterling Frost Sr. (Ron Perlman), Charlie effectively has a clean slate. However, Hasp's call gives Charlie the choice of working for her or dying. With Charlie smashing her phone and setting off in her 1969 Plymouth Barracuda, Poker Face season 2 should pick up from there.

Where Charlie runs to next is unclear, though her connection with Luka Clark in season 1 seems like it should come in handy while on the run once again, and the introduction of her sister Emily in Poker Face season 1, episode 10 “The Hook,” opens up another avenue for further exploration. Episodes are sure to keep following the Murder She Wrote and Columbo pattern that made Poker Face such a success, leaving plenty of options available for the show’s writing staff led by Johnson.
