Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Andrew Garfield reveals he doesn't know how The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Rhino fight ended as the script ended without an answer for the battle. The second installment in the Garfield-led duology saw Peter Parker try to distance himself from Gwen Stacy to honor her late father's wishes to keep her safe while also finding clues of mysterious circumstances surrounding his parents' deaths. Meanwhile, Spider-Man must deal with the mild-mannered Oscorp electrical engineer Max Dillon as he transforms into the supervillain Electro and the return of Peter's childhood friend Harry Osborn dying from a genetic disease.

Alongside Garfield, the cast for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 included Emma Stone as Gwen, Jamie Foxx as Harry, Dane DeHaan as Green Goblin, Sally Field as Aunt May and Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich. Once again helmed by Marc Webb, the film debuted to a largely mixed reception from critics and audiences alike and would bring in a solid $709 million box office haul, though when put up against its estimated $293 million budget and other webslinging films would becoming the lowest-grossing live-action Spider-Man film to date. This muted response would see Sony scrap plans for The Amazing Spider-Man follow-ups, including spinoffs centered on Venom and the Sinister Six, the former of which would find new life for a new franchise, Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

While appearing On Air with Ryan Seacrest to discuss his Oscar-nominated work in Tick, Tick...Boom! and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield reflected on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. When asked about the film's infamous ending, the star revealed he doesn't know how the Rhino fight ended as the script didn't offer any answers and the resulting "brutal" response to the film never kept the thought in his head. See what Garfield said below:

"If I remember correctly, what happened after that, was not suitable... because it was so brutal [laughs]... I have no idea. That's where the script ended, and that's where our movie ended. So you get to choose your own adventure with that one. What would you have liked to have seen happen?"

Rhino The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 infamously ended with Garfield's Peter Parker inspired by a recording of Gwen's graduation speech and coming back out of retirement to fight Sytsevich in his Rhino mech suit, swinging a manhole cover to deflect missiles shot at him and hit the villain himself before cutting to the credits. While superhero films akin to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would likely see its hero defeat their villains, it is interesting that the script for the movie didn't include any answer for how the Rhino fight ended. Though it would make sense for Garfield to have had discussions with the creatives behind the film at the time of its release for how the fight ended, it's possible they also didn't have a plan for it given how crowded the film proved to be.

Rhino's inclusion in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ultimately proved to be an example of the film's biggest flaw of working too many villains in to one story, having received hardly any screen time in the opening or closing of the movie and clearly serving as a cliffhanger set up for future installments. Giamatti's incarnation of the Russian baddie only received his mech suit thanks to Harry and The Gentleman delivering it to him to form their villainous Sinister Six for the spin-off film, with the post-credits having also included teases for Doctor Octopus, the Vulture and Kraven the Hunter. With Garfield now back in the fold in some capacity for Spider-Man: No Way Home, only time will tell whether Sony and Marvel listen to fans and Tom Holland's recent campaign to revive The Amazing Spider-Man franchise with Garfield.
