8 Things Fans Forget About Their Feud

Writer Liam Parker

WCW perfected the art of getting over a new star when Diamond Dallas Page feuded with Randy Savage. Fans connected with Page, and this was his introduction to the upper card after turning down a spot in the New World Order. Savage was unselfish in making sure the breakout star would come off as an equal to him.

The feud featured memorable moments like DDP impersonating La Parka or scoring his first victory over Savage. Unfortunately, not every aspect will be discussed in the long-term, despite deserving more credit. Both wrestlers witnessed their work together becoming strong parts of their legacies. These forgotten moments from the DDP vs. Savage feud deserve more attention.

8 Miss Elizabeth Bullying Kimberly

Miss Elizabeth in WCW

WCW booked the Miss Elizabeth character differently from WWE when having her turn heel. Elizabeth actually spent more time as a villain in WCW than a face, despite being known for thriving in the latter character role.

Kimberly Page was targeted by the heel Elizabeth when Randy Savage feuded with Diamond Dallas Page. The physical and verbal attacks from Elizabeth was the most effective execution of her heel role. Kimberly also thrived as a face the fans instantly connected with.

7 Savage Wanted To Put DDP Over

DDP Vs Randy Savage

Diamond Dallas Page has shared many great stories about Randy Savage helping him more than any other wrestler in the business. WCW gave Savage control over most of his matches like Hulk Hogan when it came to the creative finishes.

Page was shocked when Arn Anderson entered the locker room as a producer and was told Savage wanted to take the Diamond Cutter. This Spring Stampede 1997 match put DDP on the map and it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t the finish Savage wanted to go with.

6 Curt Hennig Betrayed DDP During Tag Match Against Savage

Curt Hennig WCW Debut

WCW extended the Randy Savage vs. Diamond Dallas Page feud in 1997 by having major tag matches. Curt Hennig debuted in WCW as a mystery partner of Page to take on Savage and his New World Order stablemate Scott Hall.

The introductory storyline of Hennig would see him betray DDP by leaving the match after a miscommunication. Hennig had a bigger turn later betraying the Four Horsemen, but his first backstabbing came against Page as a small part of the Savage feud.

WCW teased Savage’s prior issues with every wrestler resurfacing in the match, especially DDP. However, the massive accomplishment for DDP to win his first WCW Championship featured his biggest rival Savage raising his hand as the referee.

4 Forgotten Match In 1998

Most of the matches between Randy Savage and Diamond Dallas Page took place throughout 1997 with three PPV singles matches and many tag matches. WCW kept them apart after Savage won the tiebreaker at Halloween Havoc 1997.

There was one more singles match between the two to come the following year, during an episode of Nitro in 1998. WCW even booked a steel cage stipulation as a ratings attraction, but it ended in a no contest due to outside interference.

3 Hogan Dressed As Sting To Cheat DDP At Halloween Havoc

The big Halloween Havoc 1997 match between Randy Savage and Diamond Dallas Page culminated the feud with their third PPV outing. Savage won the match to win the feud as they moved on to other rivals afterwards.

Hulk Hogan was the main reason for DDP losing when making an appearance in the match under a Sting mask. The attack on Page cost him the match and allowed Savage to take full advantage. Hogan worked more with DDP in 1998 with this setting that up.

2 WCW's Biggest House Show Main Event

DDP Punches Randy Savage

The WCW house show market wasn’t treated with the same respect as WWE. All the top WWE names of the ‘90s worked house shows, but WCW often didn’t have the legends or main event names on the average non-televised event.

Diamond Dallas Page and Randy Savage was the biggest WCW television storyline to become a top attraction on house shows. The duo wrestled on a total of 18 house shows, with most coming in the main event. Savage didn’t have to appear on many live events, but he clearly loved his time working with DDP.

1 Savage Outed DDP & Kimberly's Marriage

DDP and Kimberly Page

It is overlooked that the first major moment in the Randy Savage vs. Diamond Dallas Page feud didn’t even come in the ring. Page turning down the New World Order led to Savage being the first big name to target him for their mutual disdain.

WCW kept DDP and Kimberly Page apart following a storyline that split them up. Savage outed their real-life romance when showing photos of Kimberly from her Playboy photoshoot. The personal element of Savage bringing DDP’s wife into the picture added more layers to their issues. WCW did a good job using reality to create a compelling program before they even wrestled each other.
