5 Best Things That Happened On The Show (& 5 That Didn't Make Any Sense)

Writer Matthew Cannon

Royal Rumble 2021 proved to be an excellent way to kick off the Road to WrestleMania. Although we didn't see many major returns on the show, except for a few notable ones, most fans still enjoyed the show nonetheless.

Some time ago, it was reported that there was major concern backstage regarding the "scary finish" WWE planned for the Royal Rumble. But it didn't look bad and some would argue that it was the best way to end the pay-per-view. There were many things WWE did excellently, and some spots even deserve special mentions. But at the same time, the company made a few errors that fans easily picked up. Overall, the show was adequate, but if WWE had avoided these mistakes it would've made a perfect pay-per-view.

20 Best Thing That Happened: The Women's Royal Rumble Match

19 Bianca Belair Rhea Ripley

This year's women's Royal Rumble match was unlike anything fans had seen before. It looked like WWE put a ton of focus on women's wrestling at this year's Royal Rumble, more so than other Rumble PPVs.

It was also a great night for Rhea Ripley who spent almost 40 minutes in the match, and Bianca Belair, who went on to win the Rumble. Most fans wanted one of these two to win and, this time, WWE didn't disappoint.

18 Didn't Make Sense: Unnecessary Camera Cuts

17 Weird Camera Cuts

As much as fans liked the Royal Rumble, the show was filled with numerous unnecessary camera cuts that slightly dampened our wrestling experience. In the women's Royal Rumble match alone, multiple camera cuts happened at the worst possible time.

For instance, Bayley's elimination was completely ignored. And later in the show, Edge and Christian teamed up to drop a double spear on Braun Strowman that also went unnoticed.

16 Best Thing That Happened: Drew McIntyre Got One Up On Goldberg

Many fans argue that Goldberg shouldn't even have gotten a WWE Championship match against Drew McIntyre at the 2021 Royal Rumble. But considering the match ended with Goldberg putting over The Scottish Warrior, it was not a bad decision.

This was Drew's second most important match of his career after the WrestleMania 36 match against Brock Lesnar last year. Now that he has "passed the test" at Royal Rumble, McIntyre can possibly win another big match at WrestleMania.

14 Didn't Make Sense: Ricochet's Royal Rumble Participation

13 Ricochet

A few weeks ago, AJ Styles and Ricochet faced each other on Monday Night Raw. Ricochet lost the match and the opportunity to enter the men's Royal Rumble match. He likely replaced Keith Lee on the show, who had been taken out of the match due to COVID-19 protocols, as his girlfriend Mia Yim tested positive for the virus.

But couldn't WWE have replaced Lee with someone else? Jey Uso was another superstar who missed the show. On SmackDown, Uso declared that he would participate in the Royal Rumble match but he didn't show up at all for the entire show.

12 Best Thing That Happened: Roman Reigns Vs Kevin Owens

11 Roman Reigns vs Kevin Owens

Roman Reigns vs Kevin Owens just had one of the best matches of 2020 at the TLC pay-per-view a month ago. At the Royal Rumble, however, these two took things to the next level and provided an even better match than their last outing.

The Big Dog vs. The Prizefighter ran for 20+ minutes, and the entire match was worth every minute, until a botched finish that made things awkward.

10 Didn't Make Sense: Referee Stopped The Count

9 Paul Heyman Botch

During the last few minutes of the Universal Championship match, Owens handcuffed Reigns in such a way that The Tribal Chief couldn't get to his feet. The referee counted to nine before Roman slammed him into a bar to stop the count.

Another referee soon arrived but this time, Paul Heyman too came to Roman's aid. He had the key but still couldn't unlock the handcuff on time. The referee, seeing no other way, stopped the count until Heyman freed Reigns from the handcuff. The Universal Champion then locked Owens in the guillotine choke and remained the last man standing.

8 Best Thing That Happened: Edge & Christian's Reunion

7 Edge and Christian Reunion

Fans were excited when WWE announced Edge's return at Royal Rumble. He started the match with Randy Orton and outlasted 29 other men to become the third wrestler in WWE's history to win the Rumble as the #1 entrant. Though technically, Edge was supposed to enter the match as the second participating. But this can be ignored.

Later in the show, Christian made an unexpected return. What followed after was a very emotional reunion between Edge and Christian which the fans witnessed.

6 Didn't Make Sense: How Did Randy Orton Heal So Fast

5 Face Burn Randy Orton

Only a few weeks ago, Alexa Bliss burned Randy Orton's face on Raw. Orton showed up with a mask to hide his wounds but at Royal Rumble, he was fine without a face cover.

Just like many other things that happened on the show, there was no explanation for it. The only explanation could be that Orton got hold of a really good ointment that magically healed his burned face.

4 Best Thing That Happened: Damian Priest Had An Impressive Debut

3 Damian Priest

Damian Priest was rumored to make his main roster debut a few weeks ago. But for whatever reason, this didn't happen. At Royal Rumble, Priest entered the match in the #14 position and spent a little over 15 minutes.

During that time, Priest eliminated four wrestlers: Kane, Elias, The Miz, and John Morrison. Incidentally, this was the most number of wrestlers eliminated by a single wrestler in this year's men's Royal Rumble. This was the best way to showcase upcoming talent.

2 Didn't Make Sense: Rey Mysterio & Victoria Beer

1 Rey Mysterio Victoria

The problem with Rey Mysterio's entry to the Royal Rumble is that it wasn't about him. Instead, a Victoria beer plug came, with a cleverly done promo from Michael Cole. Victoria is one of the oldest beer brands in Mexico, and Mysterio even wore the company's mask.

The Master of 619 didn't really make a difference at Royal Rumble and it seemed that he was only there to promote a product for WWE. Also, Rey forgot to wear his eyepatch. Or maybe Victoria healed that magically.
