4 Best Matches Of The Event (& 4 Worst)

Writer Emma Terry

The biggest event on the Summer has passed by in the blink of an eye. SummerSlam 2020 took place at WWE Thunderdome with virtual fans in attendance for what ended up being a very interesting PPV. This year's card was much shorter than usual with only 7 matches taking place on the main card whilst another was featured on the pre-show.

Some matches excelled and were an absolute joy to watch whilst others disappointed and looked more like a standard TV match. Of course, it is going to be difficult to produce a big fight feel during current times but WWE did the best they could with the resources available.

8 Best: Seth Rollins Vs. Dominik Mysterio

Dominik Mysterio, at just 23 years of age and in his in-ring debut, put on the best match of the night alongside Seth Rollins. It was full of brilliant storytelling and hard-hitting action to make the Street Fight stipulation feel legitimate.

Dominik making Rey stay out of the way so he could do it on his own was brilliant. Rollins made sure to portray that aspect perfectly by teasing Rey during the match. The ending was also fitting as a chained up Rey Mysterio had to watch his son be curb-stomped and lose his debut match.

7 Worst: Mandy Rose Vs. Sonya Deville

Circumstances obviously made this match suffer as Sonya and Mandy have just been through a massive ordeal. However, huge respect has to go to both ladies for doing their best under these conditions and still coming out to perform.

The match wasn't great with Mandy's struggles to pick up a table summing things up. Sonya did look like a legitimate badass and it is clear that she is a better wrestler than Mandy, however, it was Mandy who secured the win. This made sense as Sonya will now deservedly take time to recover from what happened.

6 Best: Asuka Vs. Sasha Banks

Asuka and Sasha Banks have sensational in-ring chemistry with one another and it is an absolute treat to watch both women tear the house down when they face off. Any wrestling fan could easily watch these women have an hour plus match and still be left wanting more afterward.

They put on a superb technical performance at Summerslam which also included great storytelling/foreshadowing. Asuka won back her Raw Women's Title after Bayley failed to help Sasha retain like Sasha helped her earlier in the night, sowing the seeds for a blow-out between the two. The only negative from this match is that Sasha once again failed to retain a title on PPV.

5 Worst: Street Profits Vs. Andrade & Angel Garza

This was simply a TV standard match pushed onto one of the biggest PPVs of the year. It lasted under 10 minutes, it was average and the outcome was completely wrong. The Street Profits have held the tag titles for a long time now and it is starting to become stale.

Therefore, having Andrade and Garza win the belts would have been the best outcome for the longevity of the division. They could have continued the feud with The Street Profits until Payback and then moved on to other opponents. However, The Street Profits who have pretty much beat everyone possible now have no fresh feuds to move onto.

4 Best: Drew McIntyre Vs. Randy Orton

It was obvious that the two red hot wrestlers were going to put on a solid match with one another. Drew and Randy had a very solid outing with entertaining back and forth action showing both men are very much on the same level as each other.

The ending was controversial, however, it really was the best outcome as Drew retaining by a backslide shows he had to pull off a cheap move to win because he knew Randy was not going down easily. It also sets up the continuation of this feud which is a win-win for everyone.

3 Worst: Braun Strowman Vs. The Fiend

This match had a lot of hype around it with The Fiend showing signs of his old self whilst Strowman had become unhinged during this feud. Therefore, a falls count anywhere match surely should have led to a brutal brawl taking places all across the arena/backstage.

Instead, it was a rushed match with no continuity of the story that was told beforehand. Why have Alexa Bliss so involved to then just completely write her out of the equation? The ending was also anti-climatic as The Fiend simply hit Strowman with a few Sister Abigails on the exposed wood to win. Roman Reigns returning afterward in a heel like. manner boosted the ending of the PPV massively but the match itself was so disappointing.

2 Best: Apollo Crews Vs. MVP

The pre-show match pitted Apollo Crews against MVP once more for the United States Titles. For a kick-off show bout, it was pretty fun as both men put on a solid showing with Crews rightfully retaining the belt and will most likely move on to a new feud.

It was a good way to build excitement for the actual PPV, with fan-favorite Apollo securing a comfortable win to hype up the virtual crowd and he then avoided a beat down from Lashley and Benjamin by smartly racing away from the duo. That could now potentially lead to an exciting feud for the US Title between Crews and Lashley.

1 Worst: Bayley Vs. Asuka

The Smackdown Women's Title match kicked off SummerSlam 2020, however, it ended up being quite disappointing as it was just a fairly average match which was filler for Asuka Vs. Sasha Banks later in the night. Bayley and Asuka clearly have chemistry together as a few weeks ago on Raw they put on a great match, although, having the two already face off killed the excitement somewhat for this match.

The match itself wasn't terrible, it was simply a let down as we all know both women can do so much better with one another. It also made Asuka look like a chump as she was easily distracted and you think she would have learned by now to avoid Sasha at ringside. Also, it made Sasha look even worse later in the night as she lost to an already weakened Asuka.
