27 Dresses writer Aline Brosh McKenna divulges the real-life inspiration behind the character of Jane and what she is doing with her life now.

The writer of 27 Dresses welcomed it to HBO Max by revealing more of the inspiration behind the main character. 27 Dresses, which stars Katherine Heigl and James Marsden, originally premiered in 2008 and quickly became a fan-favorite romcom.

27 Dresses follows Jane, played by Heigl, a friend to many who puts the world first and herself last, evidenced by the fact that she is always a bridesmaid (27 times to be exact), but never the bride. Things take a turn for the wackier when Jane’s sister gets engaged to Jane’s crush (who also happens to be her boss) at the same moment that a charming reporter, played by Marsden, walks into her life. The film was a hit, premiering at the second spot in the North American box office and easing its way into America’s pop culture lexicon with references in various other media.

Upon the news that the classic rom-com has been added to HBO Max, Aline Brosh McKenna, the writer of 27 Dresses, tweeted about the story’s origins. She revealed that the film was inspired by a personal friend who had been a bridesmaid many times and went on to say that this friend now officiates weddings. McKenna expressed awe at her friend’s leveling up in wedding importance, joking that this is what the protagonist of the film is doing now.

McKenna is also known for writing the scripts for the beloved film The Devil Wears Prada and co-creating the genre-bending CW musical dramedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. More recently, she has a partial story credit on Disney’s upcoming Cruella film starring Emma Stone, Mark Strong, and Emma Thompson. Since 27 Dresses, Heigl has appeared in various projects including the TV series Firefly Lane and Suits. James Marsden appeared on the critically acclaimed Netflix show Dead to Me and the television adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand

Though it may not always be canon, it is always fun for fans to find out what their favorite characters are up to after the official story is over. For Harry Potter fans, this even led to a spin-off play, which may be getting the Hollywood treatment itself. Although Aline Brosh McKenna was somewhat joking, it is fun to ponder where one’s favorite characters might be. Fan theories and fan fiction have been around for a long time, and survive on this need to know more, to stay with the characters and in their world for longer. This curiosity of fans has led to potentially successful fan theories in the past. Maybe, with enough support, audiences could see officiating Jane in action with a 27 Dresses sequel!
