10 NFL Players We Can't Believe Are Still On Their Teams

Writer Isabella Bartlett

When it comes to the NFL, while there are not as many players moving as in the NBA, there are still constant superstars moving from squad to squad. This upcoming offseason is expected to see more of the same, as fans will surely overreact to massive signings and trades as is tradition.

The offseason will see tons of players moving to a new team, and some of those goodbyes will be sad as beloved team members will be forced to leave due to cap issues. However, some of those releases and trades were far longer in the making. For these ten players. it's surprising they're still with their current rosters.

10 Michael Thomas

For three seasons in a row, Michael Thomas has missed significant time. His historic 2019 campaign saw him catch an NFL-record 149 catches, with 1,725 yards and nine touchdowns. Since then, Thomas has had a combined 56 catches for 609 yards and three touchdowns.

It's incredible that Thomas is still on the Saints' roster. While he won't be easy to move, the fact that he's only played ten games in three full seasons is stunning. It's hard to see the wide reciever on the Saints next year, and he likely should've been gone already.

9 Zach Wilson

It kind of feels strange that Zach Wilson is still an active member of the New York Jets. While some might feel that it would've been premature to cut the quarterback mid-season or before the 2022 campaign, he's shown less than zero ability to last in the NFL.

At a certain point, the Jets have to put their foot down, and they'll likely do it this offseason and move Wilson. That being said, it's surprising that he hasn't been moved already given reports that the locker room, especially defensive players, despised the second-year passer.

8 Aaron Rodgers

In hindsight, it's very fitting that Aaron Rodgers was Brett Favre's replacement in Green Bay. The latter threatened retirement and hinted at being traded for years before he finally was. While Rodgers hasn't been as dramatic with his decision, we have been hearing reports of him leaving since Jordan Love was drafted in 2020.

Heading into this offseason, it's hard to see Rodgers finally staying a Packer. Then again, it's surprising that he's still with the team at this point anyways. So, anything is truly possible.

7 Justin Blackmon

Yes, Justin Blackmon is still technically a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Most fans likely don't even remember the wide receiver at this point, as he hasn't played in nearly a decade. In 2013, Blackmon was suspended due to violating the league drug policy.

He was later denied reinstatement in 2015 and hasn't tried to rejoin the league since then. In a situation like this, Blackmon is still on the roster of the Jaguars but is in the suspended section of the roster. Given that the NFL won't reinstate him, the team has no reason to cut him, meaning he'll likely always be with the team.

6 Sam Darnold

So, the Sam Darnold experiment didn't work out in Carolina. The team sent three draft picks to the New York Jets in 2021 to get their quarterback of the future. The trade looked good for the Panthers too, as they won their first three games with Darnold under center.

He's won just five games since then and ended his first season in Carolina with far more turnovers than touchdowns. While his sophomore season in a Panther uniform was fair, he got far more leeway than expected, and will likely leave in the offseason.

5 Taylor Heinicke

To be clear, the reason that it's surprising that Taylor Heinicke is still with the Washington Commanders has little to do with the quarterback himself. While the passer isn't a superstar by any metric, he's a decent enough player that would be a top-tier backup.

However, he hasn't been a backup, as Heinicke has been the team's starting quarterback for the majority of the last two seasons.

4 Kenny Golladay

One has to give credit where it's due, and Kenny Golladay is living the dream. Two seasons ago, he exited Detroit in favor of the New York Giants and a massive payday. Sadly for the team, he's failed to live up to the deal.

Golladay is going on season three as a Giant, and has looked disinterested the entire time. Having caught just 43 passes in the past two seasons, it's incredible he's still with the team.

3 Ezekiel Elliott

One has to scratch their head at how the Dallas Cowboys have approached the Ezekiel Elliott situation. Years ago, the former All-Pro running back was given a massive contract that would surely age poorly with time. Nonetheless, they felt they had to reward Elliott for his early years of excellent play.

Four seasons later, Elliott is one of the highest-paid backs in the league and not even the Cowboys starting running back. His legs are clearly gone, and that's been the case for the last few seasons as well, making Dallas's inaction more baffling.

2 Jimmy Garoppolo

This is the season that Jimmy Garoppolo will leave San Francisco. Well, probably. Shoot, thinking about it again, maybe not. It feels like no matter what, Garoppolo is somehow unable to leave San Francisco, despite two potential quarterbacks on the bench alongside him.

Garoppolo is similar to Alex Smith, a solid player, but unable to get a good team over the hump. Despite that type of player being a valuable commodity, the 49ers have had trouble moving the former Super Bowl champion. For the upcoming season, with Trey Lance and Brock Purdy, Garoppolo will likely finally be leaving the team this offseason.

1 Brandin Cooks

Brandin Cooks somehow remaining a member of the Houston Texans for the last two seasons is baffling. The team has been at the bottom of the league for a while now, and show zero signs of turning around their fortunes too.

Cooks is still a great weapon for any offense in the NFL, and can especially be useful for a contender. Despite that, he's remained a Texan, which is shocking.
