10 Matches You Totally Forgot Eric Bischoff Competed In

Writer Matthew Cannon

Eric Bischoff started his career working in sales for the American Wrestling Association before transitioning into an on-screen role. From there, he found himself as the boss of World Championship Wrestling, where he would become a major character on the show as part of the nWo storyline. After WCW folded, Bischoff continued to be an authority figure in WWE as well as in TNA (now known as Impact Wrestling).

As Eric Bischoff became a major onscreen character, he started competing in matches, most memorably against Ric Flair in WCW and against his own son in a Lethal Lockdown match in TNA. But there have also been a number of bouts that are not well-remembered, but totally worth talking about.

10 Diamond Dallas Page & Jay Leno vs. Eric Bischoff & Hulk Hogan (WCW Road Wild, 8/8/1998)

Eric Bischoff Jay Leno

Of all the ridiculous celebrity matches WCW did -- Dennis Rodman vs. Randy Savage, Jerry Only of The Misfits vs. Dr. Death Steve Williams, Mr. T vs. Kevin Sullivan for some reason -- one of the most absurd is certainly Jay Leno stepping into the ring against Hulk Hogan. Wisely, this encounter happened in the form of a tag match, with DDP backing Leno and Bischoff on Hogan’s team. It’s easy to forget Bischoff was in the match, but he filled an important role as a non-wrestler who could believably eat a pin from the host of The Tonight Show.

9 David Arquette vs. Eric Bischoff (WCW Monday Nitro, 4/24/2000)

David Arquette

David Arquette’s WCW run was ridiculous -- he was brought in to promote a wrestling-themed comedy movie and ended up winning the World Title, not to mention turned heel on Diamond Dallas Page. But the title win wasn’t his first match in the promotion. Days before that fateful Thunder, on Monday Nitro, Arquette wrestled Eric Bischoff in a two-minute singles match. Arquette winning the title on his second match in WCW makes him seem slightly more humble than Hulk Hogan, who won the belt in his first.

8 Terry Funk vs. Eric Bischoff (WCW Monday Nitro, 6/5/2000)

Terry Funk vs. Eric Bischoff (WCW Monday Nitro, 6/5/2000)

It may surprise fans to find out that Eric Bischoff only won a single championship in his entire career. Determined to take the WCW Hardcore Championship off of Terry Funk, Bisch took it upon himself to do the honors, albeit with Ernest Miller interfering on his behalf.

While The Cat failed to help Bischoff get the win, further interference from The Mamalukes managed to do the job. They were rewarded for their efforts, too -- on the following Thunder the new champ awarded the title to all three Mamalukes at the same time.

7 Trish Stratus vs. Eric Bischoff (WWE Raw, 4/28/2003)

Eric Bischoff and Trish Stratus

Bischoff was a bit of a sleaze during his run as Raw authority figure, as fans certainly remember his insistence on “hot lesbian action.” On a spring 2003 episode, Trish Stratus wanted a rematch against Jazz to win back the Women’s Title, which Bischoff would only give her if Trish could beat him in a match. There was a catch, however -- if HE won, she had to spend a night with him. The match, while mercifully short, would end with Eric Bischoff getting the W, but WWE management would (kayfabe) intervene and prevent Sleazy E from following through on the stipulation.

6 Eric Bischoff vs. Vince McMahon (WWE Raw, 2/23/2004)

Eric Bischoff Vince McMahon

In 2004, WWE released a DVD about the Monday Night Wars. To promote it, they set up a Raw main event match between Eric Bischoff and Vince McMahon, playing off of a moment where Bischoff challenged his rival promoter on a 1998 episode of Nitro.

With the addition of Steve Austin as guest referee so he can be ready to officiate the WrestleMania XX match between Brock Lesnar and Goldberg, this brief affair ended in a no-contest after Lesnar ran in and F5’d Austin.

5 Eric Bischoff vs. Eugene (WWE Taboo Tuesday, 10/19/2004)

Eric Bischoff and Eugene

Eugene is one of WWE’s most infamous creations, an intellectually disabled wrestling savant who happened to be Eric Bischoff’s kayfabe nephew. The sheer audacity of the gimmick is enough to overshadow everything, including the fact that Eugene and Bischoff had a match at one point. At the fan-poll-driven Taboo Tuesday, Eugene took down his uncle in two minutes after a Hogan-esque leg drop. Then, after the bell rang, the stipulation was revealed -- fans had voted for the loser to get his head shaved.

4 John Cena vs. Eric Bischoff (WWE Raw, 10/3/2005)

John Cena vs. Eric Bischoff

Raw Homecoming was one of those special episodes loaded with old guys like Bob Orton and Roddy Piper. But for some reason, Vince McMahon decided that his Raw authority figure Eric Bischoff needed to challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship.

Despite interference from Kurt Angle in this No DQ match, Cena was able to beat the odds and quickly put away his challenger, after which the entire SmackDown locker room ran in to invade the show.

3 Eric Bischoff vs. Teddy Long (WWE Survivor Series, 11/27/2005)

Eric Bischoff vs. Teddy Long

That Raw Homecoming attack kicked off a war between Raw and SmackDown that would lead to the main event of Survivor Series 2005. Before that elimination tag match between the two rosters -- with SmackDown coming out on top -- there was a five-minute match between the two shows’ respective authority figures. It’s a pretty goofy cooldown match, with a referee from each show officiating and The Boogeyman interfering to help Teddy Long get the win.

2 Eric Bischoff & Matt Hardy vs. Generation Me (TNA Impact, 5/19/2011)

Eric Bischoff & Matt Hardy vs. Generation Me (TNA Impact, 5/19/2011)

It’s important for every wrestling fan to know that Eric Bischoff has a win over The Young Bucks. In 2011, the X Division was legitimately miffed about their lack of booking, so TNA turned it into a storyline where Bischoff had some sort of kayfabe vendetta against the division. As part of that, TNA had an episode of Impact where every X Division guy got squashed, including Generation Me -- Max Buck and Jeremy Buck -- who lost when Bischoff (wearing a karate gi) pinned Matt Jackson after a roundhouse kick.

1 Eric Bischoff vs. Jeremy Borash (TNA Impact, 4/26/2012)

Eric Bischoff vs. Jeremy Borash with Bully Ray

The 4/26/2012 episode of Impact was “Open Fight Night,” a great concept where anyone in the company can call out anybody else. Eric Bischoff had already lost the “Loser Leaves TNA” Lockdown match to his son Garett, but ring announcer Jeremy Borash decided he wanted a piece of Easy E on his way out. The whole thing lasted mere seconds, with Bully Ray interfering to low-blow Borash, allowing Bischoff an easy win. But he ended up getting his comeuppance later in the show, as Garett Bischoff and Jeremy Borash threw him in a port-a-potty and pushed it over.
