10 Hidden Details About Chuck Everyone Missed
James Rogers
Chuck was introduced early in Supernatural, long before the reveal that he is God... how much do you know about the character?
Supernatural, the cult show about the brothers Winchester, hunting things and saving people, is in its final season after a successful run of 15 long years. In the course of the years, the show has given us a wide range of characters--some instantly forgettable, some catapulted to fan favorites, and some who have made a mark for themselves over the years.
Chuck Shurley is one such character who started out as a prophet of the Lord, guest-starring in some of the earlier seasons, and then made a sudden comeback over the last few years as God. Chuck's transformation has been the biggest on the show and seeing that he had the most to hide for all these years, let us see if we can find some of the hidden details about him that might have gone unnoticed.
10 Chuck's Penname Is A Combination Of The Show's Writers
In case viewers haven't noticed, Chuck's penname, Carver Edlund, is a cleverly crafted combination of two of the show's writer-producers, Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund.
The show's creator Eric Kripke probably wanted to make a sassy statement about how writers were God when he created this name, although to be honest, this involved a lot of self-parody; Chuck started out as a hapless writer who loved his liquor and whose stories had stopped being published, most likely due to bad writing and lack of followers!
9 Chuck & The Virgin Hooker
In the season 5 finale, 'Swan Song', Chuck was shown waiting for some phone call from a mysterious Mistress Magda, presumably a woman in a hot bikini, whose picture he had on his desk.
Interestingly, this might have been a reference to Mary Magdalene, who is believed to have been saved from demons by Jesus and who then went on to become one of his most famous disciples. Dean even made a reference to the virgin hooker, thereby strengthening the possibility that Mistress Magda was Supernatural's take on Mary Magdalene, often labeled a prostitute.
8 Did God Possess Chuck When He Went Off The Radar?
Although there were ample hints that Chuck was already God when the boys first met him, the makers of Supernatural never quite clear that up. So assuming that Chuck was simply a prophet of the Lord when he was first introduced, God would have had to possess him at some point afterwards.
There was a time after season 5 when Chuck kind of went off the radar. The boys and Castiel assumed he was dead since the new prophet, Kevin Tran, manifested his powers around this time. It is possible that God might actually have dropped into Chuck some time then; after all, Chuck was supposed to die to make way for the new prophet. But he survived.
7 Joshua Informed The Brothers That God Was On Earth
Joshua was the Gardener who transported Sam and Dean into Heaven's Garden after saving them from the angel Zachariah.
Joshua was supposed to be the only one that God spoke to, and he informed the brothers that God was actually on earth, although he didn't know why. Since God turned out to be Chuck, one might have noticed this connection with hindsight.
6 Surprise! Chuck Was God!
Of course, Chuck was the one with the biggest secret, thus making his revelation one of the biggest surprises on the show.
He wasn't hiding a simple, easy-to- take-down monster like a vampire or a chupacabra underneath his hapless exterior. He was God! The God, the primordial entity with unimaginable powers who created the universe!
5 Chuck/God Appeared During Apocalyptic Times Only
Joshua also told the brothers that God had intervened with matters on earth when there was the possibility of Lucifer walking free or the Apocalypse being jumpstarted.
Close speculation will reveal that Chuck had indeed made an appearance at specific times when events of Apocalyptic nature were unfolding. For instance, he first appeared when plots to release Lucifer from his cage were rife. The next time he appeared, this time as God, was when Darkness had been unleashed and needed to be contained, another event of Apocalyptic proportions.
4 God Narrated The Original Finale
Many people might not know this but season 5 was supposed to be the original series finale for Supernatural. The show had initially been planned for 5 seasons, but of course, things went very differently and today the show is in its 15th season.
Interestingly, the final episode of season 5, 'Swan Song', actually had God narrating it and then vanishing in his seat, literally. This would have been great poetic justice, to have God see the story of the Winchester brothers through to the end, even hinting at his own true identity in the end.
3 God Had Probably Planned Jack's Death Far Back
Seeing how God turned out to be the chief nemesis of the brothers, it's very likely that he had intended for Dean to kill Jack -- which is what was about to happen in the season 14 finale -- all along.
In the season 14 finale, Sam realized that God had been playing them since the beginning, using them as a source of entertainment. God mentioned at this point that Dean killing Jack was like a reenactment of the epic story of Abraham and Issac, making it very likely that he had always intended that Jack should die in Dean's hands.
2 God Hates Death
In the season 10 finale, Dean killed Death with a swing of his own scythe. The latter's position was then filled by the reaper Billie who had been killed by Castiel.
In a moment that might have gone unnoticed, God tells the boys that he hates the present Death, i.e. Billie who always poked her scythe where it didn't belong. He preferred the old Death who didn't concern himself with others so much. It remains to be seen if Billie returns the favor by reaping God after all.
1 Chuck Actor Knew He Could Be God
The actor who plays Chuck, Rob Benedict, stated that he had been given an inkling into Chuck's true identity by the showrunners long back after the season 5 finale.
While the fans had gone into a tizzy regarding whether or not Chuck was God after season 5, the writers had never confirmed the doubts. However, Rob Benedict shared in an interview that he found out he was God when the show creator Eric Kripke called him up afterward and as good as told him he was.
