10 Funniest Groundskeeper Willie Quotes That Make Us Laugh
Sophia Bowman
The Simpsons' Groundskeeper Willie is one of the show's most iconic characters and he provides 10 of the show's funniest quotes.
Groundskeeper Willie is, quite simply, one of the best characters ever created on The Simpsons. Of course, he is definitely a caricature of a Scotsman, but it’s precisely his outlandish persona that makes him such a joy to watch.
However, there are also a number of other things about Willie that make him one of The Simpsons’ funniest characters, including his frequent sparring with Principal Skinner, his boiling rage at most of the students and, of course, the many times that he refers back to his native Scotland.
Like the best supporting Simpsons characters, he also has quite a few quotes that have audiences in stitches.
10 “Brothers And Sisters Are Natural Enemies. Like Englishmen And Scots. Or Welshmen And Scots. Or Japanese And Scots. Or Scots And Other Scots. Damn Scots They Ruined Scotland!”
It’s no secret that the relationship between Scotland and England is tense, and this joke definitely plays off of that. Willie makes clear, in a way that only he can, that his native land seems to have confrontational relationships with quite a few other nations, including...itself. It’s one of those moments that is humorous precisely because it’s so ridiculous and, as any person from Scotland can tell you, also somewhat true.
9 “If Elected Mayor, My First Act Will Be To Kill The Lot Of Ya, And Burn Yer Town To Cinders!”
Willie has, on more than one occasion, made it clear that he holds the people of Springfield in no small amount of contempt. It’s not hard to see why, really. After all, it’s not as if the people of the city are known for their intelligence or their perceptive judgments. While Willie’s threats here seem more than a little outlandish, given his troubled history with the people of the two they’re also sort of understandable.
8 “Ahhh Wolfie, Don't Feel Bad For Losin'. I Been Wreslin' Wolves Since You Were At Your Mother's Teat.”
If anyone in The Simpsons was likely to get into a wrestling match with a wolf, it would have to be Willie. Aside from anything else, he really does seem to have a closer relationship to the earth and with animals than many of the other residents of Springfield.
What’s more, one could easily believe that Willie has, in fact, been wrestling wolves for a very long time indeed (which would help explain why he seems to be so good at it).
7 “Get Your Haggis Right Here! Chopped Heart And Lungs Boiled In A Wee Sheep's Stomach! Tastes As Good As It Sounds!”
Anyone who has been to Scotland knows that haggis is, in some ways, the national dish of the country. It’s the one thing that most tourists have to try, if only because it sounds so disgusting. While opinions vary about how awful it tastes, it’s pretty clear that Willie, at least, doesn’t have a very high opinion of this most Scottish of dishes, and he’s not afraid of sharing that opinion with pretty much everyone.
6 “If We Dont Save The Wee Turtles, Who Will? Save Me From The Wee Turtles! They Were Too Quick For Me!”
In another example of the way in which Willie seems to care a great deal for animals (sometimes more than he does for people), he rushes into the school to save baby turtles after someone pulls the fire alarm. Of course, this being Willie, he inevitably gets attacked by said turtles, who seem to be quite capable of looking after themselves. Needless to say, no one intervenes to save Willie.
5 “I Warned Ya! Didn't I Warn Ya? That Colored Chalk Was Forged By Lucifer Himself.”
Principal Skinner is, to put it mildly, a rather conservative man, one who continues to believe that his way is the right way. He also seems to have a particularly dim view of the children that are under his care. In this case, he seems to think that the colored chalk has overstimulated the children. Willie quickly agrees but, in true form, he ends up hyperbolizing this best moment, making it both hilarious and absolutely ridiculous.
4 “What!? Have Ye Gone Waxy In Your Beester? I Cannot Fit In The Wee Vent, Ye Croquet-playin' Mint-muncher!”
Even though Principal Skinner is, technically speaking, Willie’s boss, that doesn’t mean that the Scotsman is willing to do whatever Skinner tells him or, if he does, he’s going to tell him off while doing it. Willie seems to have a pretty deep supply of creative insults, which is very willing and able to hurl at Skinner at the first available opportunity.
There’s something particularly hilarious about watching Willie take the pompous Skinner down a peg or two.
3 “ Teens? In Willie's Hidey-hole? I'll Mop Up Your Blood From The Inside!”
Almost from the beginning, Willie displayed a significant amount of hatred toward many of his charges (remember that time that he was the villain in a Treehouse of Horror story?) In this case, he seems to have taken a very strong exception to the fact that teenagers managed to find his hidey-hole. One can’t really blame Willie, however, for it’s pretty easy to dislike nosey teenagers and their inexhaustible ability to get into places that they shouldn’t be.
2 “I Didn't Cry When Me Own Father Was Hung For Stealing A Pig, But I'll Cry Now.”
At first glance, this quote looks more tragic than comedy, yet it’s precisely in this tension that the genius of the joke lies. Listening to Willie, it would be easy to think that he came from a Scotland that’s still mired in the Middle Ages rather than a nation that is, in fact, quite sophisticated. It’s impossible to deny, though, that with these little anecdotes Willie manages to cast a very humorous spell indeed.
1 “ Shhh! You Want To Get Sued?”
This quote is part of an exchange that Willie has with Bart during yet another Halloween special, when they are both talking about The Shining. Willie, however, pronounces it “shinnin,” presumably in order to keep from getting sued. It’s one of those moments that this series excels at, i.e. poking fun at the litigious nature of many entertainment companies, many of which will use even the slightest excuse to go to court.
