10 Best WWE Tag Teams of the 21st Century

Writer Liam Parker

Tag team wrestling has never really been at the forefront of WWE's presentation, with the company prioritizing more traditional singles-based action throughout its history. This is despite the promotion usually having the most stacked depth of talent, whether it is homegrown or imported superstar teams from across the world.

Over the past couple of decades especially, there has been a plethora of all-time great tag acts which have competed across WWE television, quite often putting on some of the best matches on the card. Now, tag team title matches can even headline WrestleMania which shows that the genre is healthier than ever thanks to the teams that paved the way

10 Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

Starting with the current Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions, Sami and Kevin are known for their shared history opposing each other as well as their time together.

The Canadian natives have become undeniable most recently due to their part in the epic Bloodline story, which saw them reunite at long last to win the titles from The Usos. Both men have made sure to keep their legacies intertwined which is why they work so well as a tag team.

9 Edge and Christian

On to another pair of Canadians, Edge and Christian may be one of the greatest teams of all time, but their run was split between the 1990s and the 2000s which stops them from being higher on the list.

Their work in the year 2000 is particularly great though, becoming more comedic figures who thrived alongside the likes of Kurt Angle and Mick Foley. Both men also enjoyed legendary singles careers after splitting up, which is not usually what happens when teams separate in WWE.

8 Los Guerreros

The uncle and nephew tandem of Chavo and Eddie Guerrero was as entertaining inside the ring as any team, with their Lucha-inspired offense forming an exciting part of the SmackDown brand for a number of years.

Eddie was of course the star of the team, but his influence helped get Chavo over to a new level to the point where he could enjoy a successful career in WWE too. Their two tag team title reigns could have been more if not for ‘Latino Heat’ taking over, pushing Eddie to stardom as he captured the WWE Championship in magnificent circumstances.

7 The Bar

Both Cesaro and Sheamus will go down as two of the most consistent performers of their era, with their collaboration as part of The Bar perhaps being their best work. Formed off the back of an underrated best of 7 series, the Swiss and Irish superstars immediately gelled as a team and would go on to win 5 tag team titles together.

In the few years they were around they may not have got the credit they deserved, but they should certainly be regarded as one of the best teams of the modern era.

6 Team Hell No

WWE loves odd-couple tandems a little too much, but if there was ever an exception to be had it would be for Team Hell No. Daniel Bryan and Kane had no business being as good as they were together, but they managed to pull off the uneasy alliance to great effect.

In a career marked by huge successes, it became a big part of Bryan’s WWE story, whilst also offering up a great twilight run for Kane towards the end of his career.

5 The Hardy Boyz

The extreme brothers will always be remembered by fans of a certain age as the coolest tag team of all time, but they were also vitally important for tag team wrestling in general.

The genre needed a refresh around the turn of the century, with traditional tag team wrestling just not getting the profile it deserved. Alongside the likes of Edge and Christian and The Dudley Boyz, Matt and Jeff proceeded to revolutionize the sport through their antics in TLC and various other exciting matches. Both had terrific singles careers as well inside and outside of WWE, showing just how popular they have become.

4 The Shield

The fact that all three members of The Shield became multiple-time world champions shows how well-thought-out the group was at a time when WWE was acting in far from peak form.

Whether they were performing as a trio or a duo, The Shield looked unbeatable as they tore through the ranks of WWE. Even after they split it was clear that Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose were the future of the business, even if the latter had to become Jon Moxley to reach his potential.

3 The Dudley Boyz

The Dudley Boys

The ECW originals made their way into WWE shortly before the turn of the century, leading to them being one of the most successful tag teams in the history of the business.

Bubba Ray and D-Von excelled in stipulation matches, most notably TLC, where their brand of hardcore violence became a huge part of the tag team division at the time. Their legacy is apparent, as they were always much better together than apart, which is often the case with great tag teams.

2 The Usos

Their longevity and body of work may be unmatched by any team in WWE history, particularly now that The Usos are main event-adjacent figures as part of The Bloodline.

Jimmy and Jey have gone through a few iterations of their team, whether it be the face-painter high-energy version or the more gruff appearing ‘Uso Penitentiary’ era. It is their work in The Bloodline though that has cemented them as one of the best tag teams of all time, which makes the recent split all the more heartbreaking.

1 The New Day

The New Day should not have succeeded in the way that they did, as they have managed to become one of the most beloved tag teams of all time purely off their own hard work.

Big E, Xavier Woods, and Kofi Kingston are all equally talented performers who only make each other better when they are together, making for some of the best WWE tag team moments in history. Whether it be their rivalry with The Usos, their record-breaking tag reign, or KofiMania, the New Day stand alone at making wrestling feel good, especially when knowing how great the men behind the characters are too.
