WWE WrestleMania 4 & 5 Weren't Actually Hosted At Donald Trump's Trump Plaza

What was something common about WrestleMania 4 and WrestleMania 5? Well, aside from some wrestlers working both shows, the other thing that was common about these shows was that they emanated from the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, New Jersey – at least that’s what WWE told their fans watching at home. But these two WrestleMania events didn’t actually take place in the Trump Plaza. So why did WWE lie about it? It turns out it was a promotional tactic and the actual shows happened in a different venue nearby.

Boardwalk Hall Hosted Both WrestleManias

Both WrestleManias had a stacked card. WrestleMania 4 was the first and only time WWE centered their biggest show around a WWE Championship tournament. There isn’t much good to say about this WrestleMania, except that fans saw Randy Savage win his first World Title here. WrestleMania 5 saw The Mega Powers tussle it out against each other for the WWE Championship in the main event. Savage was the heel going into this match, and he failed to capture the WWE Title from Hogan.

While WWE said both events were held at the Trump Plaza, that wasn’t the case. They were held at the Boardwalk Hall (known at the Historic Atlantic City Convention Hall at that time), which was closer to the Trump Plaza. The reason why WWE did false advertising during both shows was simple, these events were sponsored by Donald Trump. This wasn’t the first time WWE lied about things to the viewers at home. They regularly inflated attendance numbers during their shows to set up new records. They did that during WrestleMania 3 and claimed 93,173 fans were in attendance. But that was a huge exaggeration and the real numbers were around 78,500. While WrestleMania 4 and 5 didn’t take place at the Trump Plaza, in kayfabe, it was the first time a venue hosted back-to-back WrestleManias. In reality, that record belongs to the Boardwalk Hall.

Donald Trump & Vince McMahon’s Friendship

This was the first time Trump collaborated with WWE and their relationship would only grow stronger in the upcoming years. The former United States President has made several appearances in WWE and even feuded with McMahon in the late 2000s.

In 2013, during the Hall of Fame ceremony, Trump talked about McMahon and said, “Vince is an amazing man. He really is. I mean, we kid, we have fun, but everybody knows, he is an amazing guy. And nobody has done a job like he has. So, it’s a great honor.” Later that night Trump got inducted to the Hall of Fame by none other than Vince McMahon.

WrestleMania 4 and 5 were the only times Trump Plaza “hosted” a WWE event. The casino eventually closed in 2014, and a few years later, the building was demolished as well. Trump Plaza was one of Trump’s real estate that made him wealthy in the 80s.

Back in 2007, Trump and Vince also got into a storyline which was dubbed as the “Battle of the Billionaires.” Since they couldn’t wrestle each other directly, each chose another wrestler to represent them at WrestleMania. Trump had Bobby Lashley, whereas McMahon had Umaga. This was a Hair vs Hair match, which Lashley ended up winning, saw Trump shave McMahon's head in front of everyone in the arena, creating one of the most memorable moments in the history of WrestleMania.
