WWE Interested In Nick Aldis, But For An Unexpected Role

Writer Owen Barnes

Following news that former NWA star and IMPACT Wrestling performer Nick Aldis was finishing up with the promotion, rumors started to swirl that he might be a target for one of AEW or WWE. Confirmation this week suggests that WWE is, in fact, interested, but not in the type of role most fans would assume. A former champion who is in great shape and has the potential to be a big star, it rumored that WWE doesn't want him to actually wrestle.

As per Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com, WWE officials see Aldis not as an in-ring performer, but as a potential backstage producer.

Nick Aldis NWA

There's no doubt that Aldis could offer value as a producer. But, that WWE doesn't see a wrestler who is arguably in his prime as someone who can help the in-ring product by appearing as a performer and wrestling matches is intriguing. That's the kind of job that is typically best for wrestlers who are transitioning out of the ring because they aren't drawing or are physically unable to handle the grind based on age or past injuries. A few good examples are former stars like Shane Helms, Abyss, Jamie Noble, Tyson Kidd, and Jason Jordan. Unless Aldis has insinuated he'd prefer a backstage role, it's fascinating that this is where WWE would see him best utilized.

Aldis was recently in the main event scene in a promotion that Triple H pays attention to. He was vying for their world title. He previously held championships in Impact and NWA, and while WWE doesn't hold a lot of stock into what that means when translated into hiring a WWE star, they've brought in heavy players from these promotions in the past with some success.

Is This The Best Use Of Aldis' Talents?

Maybe this is what Aldis wants. Perhaps he sees this as getting his foot in the door as WWE is rumored to be in the midst of a hiring freeze. If he is brought into the fold as a backstage producer, he would undoubtedly be a valuable asset.
