WWE 2K May Have Just Confirmed 2K22 Will Include GM Mode

Writer Owen Barnes

WWE 2K may have confirmed its upcoming installment will usher in the return of GM Mode via a tweet it published during draft weekend.

It's been a while since 2K released a new WWE game. Well, a new game in its main series of WWE titles anyway. It offered up WWE 2K Battlegrounds last year to fill the gap left by the canceled WWE 2K21. The studio decided to take a break from its regular schedule following the backlash caused by the poor quality of WWE 2K20.

The Return Of GM Mode

Suffice to say, WWE 2K22 needs to be pretty darn great if the studio wants to stand any chance of winning back its fans. One of the main ways it might go about doing that is by reintroducing GM Mode. 2K has never actually included GM Mode in its WWE games, but hinted that it might be working on its own version for 2K22.

As fans were preparing for the first night of the draft on Friday, one fan tweeted that it'd be cool if players could draft their own roster in WWE 2K22. WWE 2K's official Twitter account caught sight of the tweet and replied with a thinking emoji, implying that players will very much be able to do that.

A Virtual Battle For Brand Supremacy

For those unfamiliar with GM Mode, it was included in some of the SmackDown vs. Raw games from more than a decade ago. Players could assume the role of General Manager, pick their Superstars in a draft, and then attempt to put together cards and PPVs with the goal of getting better star ratings for your shows than the other GMs. There was also a GM of the Year award up for grabs every 12 months.

Since 2K wasn't developing WWE games when GM Mode was last available, it might well be called something else if it is included. WWE doesn't technically have GMs anymore either, so it would make sense for the mode to be renamed. A lot of things will need to wow fans to convince them 2K is the right studio to keep creating WWE games, and a GM or Draft Mode would go a long way towards winning back that faith.
