Will The Netflix Show Get A Season 2? Everything We Know

Writer Owen Barnes

Is Black Night, the South Korean dystopian Netflix series starring Kim Woo-bin and Song Seung-heon, getting a second season? Here's what we know.

5-8 from Black Knight

Summary

  • Black Knight season 2 is not confirmed yet, as Netflix has not announced its renewal or cancellation. The first season had a satisfying ending, so there might not be much interest in a new entry.
  • There is no release date for season 2, but if it gets greenlit, it will most likely be released between the end of 2024 and 2025. The CGI visuals took a lot of time and effort to create, so a similar amount of time will be needed for filming and completion.
  • If season 2 is produced, the main cast, including Kim Woo-bin, Esom, and Kang You-seok, would likely return. There is a possibility that Song Seung-heon, despite being caught in an explosion, could also return due to his character's mutant abilities.

Season 1 of Black Knight, the Netflix South Korean dystopian drama, released in May 2023, but will there be a season 2? Based on Lee Yun-kyun's webtoon series of the same name, Black Knight follows a delivery driver named 5-8 (Kim Woo-bin) attempting to survive in a post-apocalyptic Korea where Earth has been turned into a barren wasteland and very little of humanity remains after a comet strike. The planet has become so inhabitable that the remaining population must rely on oxygen masks and tasks to breathe due to the massive air pollution.

At the end of season 1, 5-8 teams up with Jeong Seol-ah (Esom), a high-ranking official of the Defense Intelligence Command, to bring down the Chemonmyeong Group. Led by Ryu Seok (Song Seung-heon), the Cheonmyeong Group has maintained an iron grip on the production and sale of oxygen tanks and masks. Thus, 5-8 and Jeong Seol-ah combine their military efforts to overthrow the Cheonmyeong Group, and they seemingly kill Ryu Seok. But there is still a lot left to explore in a potential Black Knight season 2, though the question is, will it happen?

Black Knight Season 2 Is Not Confirmed

Characters from Black Knight

While there is a possibility that Black Knight season 2 could happen since Netflix has not announced a cancelation, it has not been renewed either. Neither series director Chu Ui-seok nor the show's cast or crew have commented if a second season is in the works, or even if they are interested in making one. While there are some plot threads that could be explored in a potential second season, the first season is a self-contained story with a satisfying ending, so there might not be much interest in a new entry.

Black Knight Release Date Info

With no confirmation for Black Knight season 2, there is of course no release date. While it is difficult to speculate when a potential season 2 will be released, director Chu Ui-seok has stated that he "...dedicated a lot of time and effort to visualize" the CGI, so a similar amount of time will most likely be needed to film and complete season 2 (via The Korea Times). If Netflix greenlit more episodes, they would most likely be released sometime between the end of 2024 and 2025.

Black Knight Cast

Soldiers in Black Knight

If a Black Knight season 2 were to be produced, much of the main cast would likely return since many of the important characters survive the season 1 finale. Therefore, Kim Woo-bin, Esom, and Kang You-seok (who plays Sa-wol) would most likely return. There is also a possibility that Song Seung-heon could also return as Ryu Seok because despite being caught in the explosion at the end of season 1, it was revealed that he was injected with mutant blood, giving him both a metal skeleton and the ability to heal quickly.

Black Knight Story Details

Characters sitting in Black Knight

It's not clear what Black Knight season 2 will be about other than it could continue the storyline of the surviving main characters. One possible storyline for season 2 would be to reveal that Ryu Seok is still alive and is hunting down the people who wronged him. The webtoon does not serve as a helpful indicator of what would happen next because lead actor Kim Woo-bin has stated Black Knight is " a whole different story and a whole different universe."

Perhaps season 2 would focus on an entirely different story with a new cast of characters, or would be a more faithful adaptation of the webtoon. While there is a lot to speculate about, until it's confirmed by Netflix, the story details of a potential Black Knight season 2 remain unclear.
