Why Cynthia Is Missing In Season 3 Of Malcolm In The Middle
Isabella Bartlett
Cynthia is absent for multiple episodes of Malcolm in the Middle season 3, and there's a good reason for the character's missed time on the show.
In Malcolm in the Middle season 3, one of the minor characters, Cynthia Sanders (Tania Raymonde), disappears for a number of episodes. The 2000s sitcom primarily follows Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), a gifted 11-year-old who is called a Krelboyne because of his intelligence. While several of the child actors left the industry after the show, Muniz has continued to act, his most recent role being in an episode of New Amsterdam. Malcolm in the Middle is also known for casting Bryan Cranston as the main character's father, Hal, several years before he would play the much darker role of Walter White in Breaking Bad.
Raymonde was unknown at the time of her appearance on the sitcom but would later play the emotional part of Alex Rosseau, one of the Others living on the island on Lost. Raymonde has since moved between teen series and more serious fare, playing Brittany Gold in Goliath and Zarra in Switched At Birth. Before her Malcolm in the Middle character, Cynthia, goes missing in season 3, she has an impact on Malcolm and his brother Reese (Justin Berfield), allowing the sitcom to dive deeper into the differences between them. But there is a good reason why Cynthia disappears for a number of episodes.
Cynthia Goes To Europe In Malcolm In The Middle Season 3
New to school, Cynthia is introduced in Malcolm in the Middle season 2, episode 12, "Krelboyne Girl," and she and Malcolm have a peaceful interaction at first. Cynthia is one of Malcolm in the Middle's best characters despite only appearing in four episodes, the last being season 4, episode 2, "Humilithon," where she has changed schools because she is too embarrassed to continue attending Malcolm's school. Season 3, episode 14, "Cynthia's Back" reveals that she was in Europe with her dad, and that's why she hasn't been seen in a while.
Cynthia's brief Malcolm in the Middle plotlines revolve around attempting to be popular and appear cool, including when she wants to have a party when she's the new student at school. Malcolm's softer, more sensitive nature is shown here as he often tries to help Cynthia as he doesn't want her to be hurt. When Cynthia comes back from Europe, she has gone through puberty and has breasts now, which she feels awkward and embarrassed about. She requests that Malcolm hide this. This storyline shows that in contrast to Malcolm's tough, oldest brother, Francis, Malcolm is often compassionate toward others.
Cynthia Exposes The Main Differences Between Malcolm And Reese
Cynthia's season 3 storyline after coming home from Europe highlights Malcolm and Reese's sibling rivalry and unique personality traits. Reese wants to date Cynthia because he is interested in her new body, and Malcolm knows that this is insulting and offensive. Malcolm shares his intelligence when he proves that Reese isn't actually aware of Cynthia's name. Reese is embarrassed, echoing the way that he has made Cynthia feel, and Malcolm is proud that he has behaved in a more polite and appropriate manner than his older brother. Since Reese often makes Malcolm feel badly about himself, this is a win for the middle child.
Unlike Reese, Francis, and Malcolm's younger brother, Dewey, in Malcolm in the Middle, Malcolm is good at observing the world around him and being perceptive to other people's needs. Cynthia shows that Malcolm may excel in the classroom, but he has emotional intelligence as well, and he does what he can to help his classmate. When Cynthia leaves, Malcolm is changed and knows that he can stand up for himself and others. This is a perfect example of a time when Malcolm stands apart from his family and does the right thing, and the show's overall theme that growing up is difficult comes into play.
