Why AEW's Blackpool Combat Club Is So Perfect

Writer Isabella Bartlett

In just a little over a month, AEW's Blackpool Combat Club has become one of the most popular and intriguing things going on in AEW and perhaps the business. That's the kind of lighting in a bottle you can't manufacture. Not only does it have two of the most popular veterans and young up and comer as its members - Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, and Wheeler Yuta. But there is plenty of logic behind the story of how the group came together.

When you toss in quite possibly the most respected agent/talent scout of the last twenty years in Regal, who has ties to Mox and Dragon and you have the makings of a very dangerous unit. You also have the makings of what so far has been a perfect story being told.

The Technician

Bryan Danielson Chopped

There is seldom any wrestling fan in the world that doesn’t think that The American Dragon Bryan Danielson isn’t the best wrestler in the world. Since he arrived in AEW, he has put on all sorts of marquee matches with anyone and everyone. Rookies and longtime veterans who haven’t had the exposure that Danielson had are immediately made better just by being in the ring with him. He eventually started watching more and more of his former WWE brethren, Jon Moxley, and instead of wanting to fight him, he wanted the pair to join forces and do something that certainly a purist like Jim Cornette might want to do and rid AEW of all of the clowns on the roster. He even cited future partner Wheeler Yuta as a guy who could be great if he wasn’t hanging around idiots like Danhausen.

The Brawler

Jon Moxley Posing

Plenty of great old-school teams had a master technician and a guy who could wrestle you to the mat but would also rather bite your face clean off your head. That’s where Jon Moxley comes into play. Before his WWE run, he spent years honing his craft as a Death Match wrestler.

But he also has that level of “folk hero” amongst the fans - he currently can do no wrong and the unique partnership with Danielson not only turned The Dragon back into a babyface, but their match at Revolution was an instant classic and fulfilled a storyline point - Mox wasn’t going to align himself with someone he hasn’t bled with. William Regal’s appearance at the end of their war, despite being released by WWE was still a welcome shock to the system.

The Future

Wheeler Yuta Bryan Danielson William Regal

From the instant, Danielson mentioned several AEW superstars by name, the notion of him and Mox not just taking over AEW but forging its future has been captivating to see just which star would be first on their radar. Wheeler Yuta was more than excited to answer the call. Yes, Mox and Dragon both made mincemeat out of the rookie, but when the smoke cleared he had earned their respect and the respect of William Regal, earning his way into the forged Blackpool Combat Club. While it remains to be seen just how great a star Yuta will be, when you’re being taught by three amazing veterans, you better get great or get gone. So far, Yuta has held up his end of the bargain and is a great amalgamation of both Mox and Danielson.

So far, The Blackpool Combat Club has been nothing but electric in the ring thanks to the elite skill level of all parties involved. It’s been a long time since all members of a stable were as beloved as this trio and their leader, William Regal. The storyline at the forefront and the backstory between the three veterans have only helped to shape The BCC.

Regal has waged war with both Danielson and Moxley. He also has helped train them as well. Everything he said in his promo after Revolution was true. All three are undoubtedly helping to bring Yuta up to their level - which is what plenty of old-school veterans would say a stable is all about. Most stables are created to help build new stars - several Horsemen rosters, DX, The Nation, Evolution, and Mox’s old Shield. They’ve all helped not just to create stars, but breed top stars in the process. Tony Khan gets some grief sometimes for his fan service style of booking, but the Blackpool Combat Club's fan service booking has been logical and perfect thus far.
