Who Is The Father Of Joy’s Kids In My Name Is Earl?
Isabella Bartlett
My Name Is Earl ended on a major cliffhanger when season 5 was canceled, and it leaves one mystery about Joy's kids unresolved.
My Name Is Earl is a sitcom that ended before a planned season 5, and as a result, the father of Joy's kids remains a mystery. The NBC comedy first aired in 2005 and followed the titular trailer park resident trying to turn his life around when he learns about karma. After winning $100,000, Earl (Jason Lee) makes a list of all the crimes he's committed and attempts to right those wrongs, but part of what makes the show great is the supporting characters in his life. One of those characters is Earl's ex-wife, Joy, who continuously attempts to kill Earl and has two rebellious children, Dodge and Earl Jr.
Though Netflix is canceling so many shows, sometimes without wrapping up those series' season cliffhangers, NBC did that to My Name Is Earl years before Netflix was making original content. The mystery of who those children's biological fathers are is a running gag throughout the series and has surprisingly become the show's biggest talking point since it ended in 2009. And season 4 ended on a major cliffhanger that one of Joy's kids doesn't have the biological father that audiences had expected for years. It's a mystery that viewers will never get closure for, but that might not necessarily be a bad thing.
Earl Is Dodge's Father
Unlike Earl Jr.'s father and whether or not Earl completed his list, the mystery of Dodge's father is an open and shut case. It's known that Dodge's real father is a random guy Joy hooked up with at Crab Shack while she was dating Earl. It's revealed in the season 4 finale, "Dodge's Dad", that it was on Halloween, and as everyone was dressed in outfits and masks, she has no idea who that random guy is. The one thing Joy knows about the father is that he was dressed in a skeleton costume. However, it was Earl who wore a skeleton costume that night, meaning that he really is Dodge's father.
Earl Jr.'s Father Is Never Revealed, But It’s Not Darnell
My Name is Earl season 5 never happened, which means that while Dodge's father was revealed in the series finale and it also created the mystery of who Earl Jr.'s father is. For years, even though Earl helped raise Earl Jr. for the first part of his life, he knew the child wasn't his from the moment the baby was born as they literally have different skin colors. Joy then leaves Earl for Earl Jr.'s real father, the Crab Shack chef Darnell. However, in "Dodge's Dad" a DNA test result reveals that Darnell isn't actually Earl Jr.'s son either, and that's the very last scene of the series.
TV show revivals have become a huge trend, and there's a chance that the mystery of who Earl Jr.'s dad is could be answered in a My Name Is Earl revival. Lee has discussed how much he wants to revive the show and was even in talks with creator Greg Garcia to make a movie (via E! News). However, the fact that the mystery wasn't answered makes it even more fascinating, and if season 5 was greenlit, the reveal might not be as satisfying. In a Reddit AMA, Garcia revealed that he hadn't even figured out who the father is, so season 5 could have led to a disappointing conclusion.
