Vanessa Kirby sat down for a virtual chat with Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday to discuss the drama Pieces of a Woman.

But first, the pair caught up on current events, where Kirby revealed that she hasn’t seen Meghan and Harry’s interview [with Oprah] yet. Kimmel noted with a laugh that they have seen The Crown, which prompted a conversation about how strange it would be to have a TV show made about your grandparents.

Kimmel went on to reference Kirby’s BAFTA nomination for the film, adding that she’s been nominated for “pretty much every award” that has come out so far. The late-night host asked her if she knows when certain awards are going to be announced, and the actress said that she doesn’t keep track of deadlines or award schedules — it’s always a surprise.

Her fellow BAFTA nominees include Frances McDormand for Nomadland and Alfre Woodard for Clemency.

“You have a Boston accent in the movie — is that the hardest American accent to do?” Kimmel asked the London-born actress, whose additional credits include Mission Impossible – Fallout and The Crown. Kirby said that she was particularly worried about ever seeming like she was British during the birthing scene, explaining that many actors tend to go into their natural accent during emotional scenes, or scenes that require a lot of shouting. The birthing scene encompassed these elements.

Referencing the one-shot, lengthy birth scene that involved shouting, Kirby explained that she prepared by staying in the Boston accent for an entire month leading up to it. “I literally became this different person,” said the actress. “It’s such a different sensibility, even,” she said, of the experience. Kirby also shadowed an ob-gyn to prepare for the birthing scene.
