Summary

- Allen's idea would involve Andy reuniting with his old toys, which have become vintage, and passing them on to his own children.
- While Toy Story 4 served as a conclusion to Woody's arc, there is still potential for other characters' stories to continue in the fifth installment.
Tim Allen has an emotional idea for Toy Story 5's plot that would see the toys' story come full circle. Allen has signed on to reprise his role as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the fifth installment of Pixar's beloved Toy Story series. The series follows a group of sentient toys, led by Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz, as they navigate being Andy's toys and later find new owners and purpose in their lives.
Although Toy Story 4 had what felt like a definitive ending, Allen has an idea for how the story can continue. In an interview with The Movie Dweeb, Allen revealed what his dream Toy Story 5 movie would look like.
His idea is a pretty emotional and unique one, as it would be the first film told through Andy's perspective rather than the toys. Usually, the films follow the toys working hard to be Andy's toys, giving him everything he needs, or finding a new owner when necessary. However, this would turn the tables, see Andy fighting to get his toys back and open the door for future films with Andy's kids. Check out Allen's statement below:
This is really off the cuff. It made me very emotional yesterday because a guy—I went to get coffee at a very small little coffee bar that he grinds his own coffee—asked me the same question just yesterday... I don't know if this is where the story is going, but what if the whole story was through Andy as an adult? [He] has children, and they just happen to be online, and the kid goes, 'Have you ever seen this toy?' and Andy sees that Buzz has got a hand missing, and they're selling these vintage toys. And Andy goes and gathers all the toys up. He has to go out and find each one of them and put them back together, bring them back to his house, and start the whole thing over again with his son. And I said, 'What a wonderful idea, it's all through Andy's eyes because we [the toys] made his life, and now he's returning that favor.
What Could Toy Story 5's Story Be?
Allen emphasized that his idea for Toy Story 5 was only an idea, and there's no confirmation the film would take this course of action. However, it is interesting because it's an idea that would work after the ending of Toy Story 4. Making another film is going to be tricky because the last film ended with Woody deciding to become a "Lost Toy" along with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), while the other toys went back to be with Bonnie (Madeleine McGraw). With the toys divided and each seeming to find their purpose, it will be difficult for them to reunite for another outing.
Toy Story 4's producers previously stated the film marked the end of Woody's arc. However, there is still the potential for other characters' stories to continue.
Allen's idea suggests a significant time jump that will see Andy go from being a college student to a father. It's not too far-fetched to think of the toys growing old and becoming vintage toys at this point. Other fan theories have also suggested Andy returning for Toy Story 5, although none provided as smooth a path for this happening as Allen did. Other popular theories are that the toys might find themselves with a new owner or in a new location or that the film may follow Woody's Lost Toy adventures.
Some viewers even want Sid (Erik Thomas von Detten) to return in Toy Story 5. After all, one can't help but wonder what happened to him after he learned toys could talk. Another popular theory is that Toy Story 5 will move away from Woody and Buzz and delve into other toy stories. However, with Allen returning and Hanks potentially returning, the two protagonists will likely appear in some capacity. Ultimately, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go full circle with Toy Story 5 and emotionally tackle Andy's adult life.
