Thor's Forgotten Brother Has An Even Better Mjolnir

Writer Emma Terry

The forgotten adopted brother of Thor, Roger "Red" Norvell, was given his own version of Mjolnir by Odin, but his proved to be so much better.

The forgotten brother of Thor has an even better version of Mjolnir - one with all of the same powers and destructive capabilities, but none of the original's negative aspects. Roger "Red" Norvell is the adopted brother of Thor who was first introduced as an antagonist manipulated by Loki, but grew into a worthy Asgardian warrior in his own right. While he eventually proved that he isn’t as mighty as Thor despite his explosive introduction, his version of Mjolnir is easily superior.

Red Norvell was introduced in Thor #273 but didn’t wield the power of Thor until a few issues later in Thor #276 by Roy Thomas, John Buscema, Tom Palmer, Glynis Wein, and Joe Rosen. Red was a human cameraman working on a documentary about Asgardians when he met and fell in love with Lady Sif. Using this infatuation to his advantage, Loki introduced Red to Thor’s Belt of Strength and Iron Gloves so that he would become as powerful as the God of Thunder. He challenged Thor for the God of Thunder’s title as well as for the hand of Lady Sif, and while in the end he failed to usurp Thor, he proved himself worthy of holding cosmic power, and Odin decided to adopt Red as his own son.

When Odin adopted Red Norvell, he decided to give him his own weapon created from the same Uru metal that made Mjolnir. Red’s weapon became known as War-Hammer, first appearing in Thor #478, and it proved to be way more effective than the original Mjolnir. First off, War-Hammer had a longer shaft which allows its user to swing it with even more strength (a flaw Mjolnir has always had thanks to Loki's manipulations.) As far as War-Hammer’s magical qualities, it has all of the same properties as Mjolnir without any of the hang-ups. War-Hammer possesses the power to be summoned by its wielder, offers them weather manipulation, flight, and energy projection, and has even been shown to create wormholes offering the wielder the power of teleportation. What War-Hammer doesn’t have is a blocking enchantment that keeps people from using it if the hammer doesn’t deem them worthy, meaning Red never has to worry about losing the right to wield it - something which has happened to Thor multiple times.

Thor Red Norvill Odin

Not only does War-Hammer possess enhanced versions of the best qualities of Mjolnir without any of the negative aspects, it also carries with it way less baggage. Mjolnir has recently become a being known as the God of Hammers, one that has held a grudge against Thor and Odin for trapping its essence inside of a weapon to use as they saw fit. Mjolnir has apparently been miserable as Thor’s hammer, and now seeks vengeance against the gods of Asgard, a dark aspect that is not shared by War-Hammer. While Odin ultimately adopted Red with the intention of using him to answer a prophecy that seemed destined to kill his "true" son, he was at least kind enough to arm him with an amazing weapon.

While War-Hammer has proved to be a better version of Mjolnir, its wielder sadly was not up to snuff in terms of surviving Thor-level threats, as Red Norvell was tragically killed in the recent Thor #11. Thor’s forgotten brother wasn’t able to save himself even with the intense power of War-Hammer, and with his death, War-Hammer has been lost. However, with Mjolnir’s villainous revelation, Thor himself could potentially now find and use War-Hammer to bring about the original weapon’s ultimate destruction.
