The Rock Could Return To WWE Well Before WrestleMania 39 [Rumor]

Writer Michael Hansen

Many WWE fans are holding out hope for a dream WrestleMania 39 match between Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and the company's top star, Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

WrestleMania 39 will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on the Apr. 1-2 weekend. Not only is there belief that The Rock could suit up for a match at The Showcase of Immortals, but there are rumblings that WWE could ask Hall of Famer 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin to wrestle as well. It's apparently possible that The Rock returns several months before WrestleMania 39 weekend to set up the dream showdown with Reigns.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Louis Dangoor of GiveMeSport), Dave Meltzer stated "there's a" possibility of The Rock making an appearance at the Jan. 28 Royal Rumble pay-per-view that will run at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

"This Royal Rumble, there’s so many different things that they can do at this Royal Rumble to build up to WrestleMania," Meltzer said. "Obviously everyone would expect Cody (Rhodes), there’s always the chance of Dwayne, others that can be thrown in there."

It certainly would make sense to bring back The Rock for a marquee pay-per-view like the Royal Rumble. WWE would need ample time to build up a marquee, once-in-a-lifetime match like Reigns vs. The Rock, after all. But of course, a lot of this will depend on The Rock's availability. He'll be occupied with his duties as a co-owner of the XFL on top of his acting schedule.

The Tribal Chief is the longest-reigning Universal Champion in history, and he's closing in on the three-year anniversary of his last pinfall loss. WWE has pushed Reigns through the roof, and a showdown with The Rock would only improve his status as an all-time great.

The Rock's Last WWE Match

The Rock's most recent WWE match took place nearly seven years ago at WrestleMania 32. He defeated Wyatt Family member Erick Rowan in just six seconds via pinfall, much to the excitement of the crowd of AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Rock was subsequently surrounded by the Wyatt Family members, but John Cena showed up unexpectedly and helped his former enemy fight them off.
