The 10 Worst NXT TakeOver Main Events, According To Cagematch.net

Writer Isabella Bartlett

NXT Takeover's often provide some of the greatest matches of the year, with the in-ring product being the focus of these shows. The main events of these shows are always the focus and selling point, with these bouts often getting tons of time to become classic encounters, which many of them have.

However, while there have been some brilliant main event matches at these events, not all of them have been perfect. Whether it's due to poor chemistry inside the ring, the finish being disappointing, or the match itself just not working, there have been some lackluster Takeover main events over the years.

10 Finn Balor vs. Samoa Joe - 7.69 (NXT Takeover: Dallas)

Samoa Joe bust open at NXT TakeOver: Dallas

This match found itself in a tough position when it came to the rivalry between Finn Balor and Samoa Joe because it was the middle of the three main events that they had. There was nothing wrong with the match, as these two had good chemistry.

However, when considering what came after their time in NXT, it is no surprise that it is seen as one of the weakest main events in the history of Takeover, even though it features two greats from the brand. They started out very intense, but Joe being legitimately bust open really slowed things down due to several pauses, which hurt the pacing.

9 Bobby Roode vs. Shinsuke Nakamura - 7.63 (NXT Takeover: Orlando)

Bobby Roode vs Shinsuke Nakamura (NXT Takeover: Orlando)

Bobby Roode was very different from the typical main event star in NXT who would battle for the NXT Championship. The main reason for that was his old-school in-ring style, which was typically a lot slower than what the brand was known for.

He and Shinsuke Nakamura worked well together and they did have nice chemistry, but this one just never kicked out of second gear in order to truly get fans excited. It was fairly slow-paced and while it was technically sound, it lacked real thrill.

8 Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe - 7.58 (NXT Takeover: Brooklyn II)

Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura headlined two NXT Takeovers, with this being the first of them. It was clear they were still feeling each other out at this point, which is why their second match ended up being far better as they had more chemistry at that point.

They worked well together, but it simply wasn't as well received in comparison to some of the other great Takeover classics. They put together a physical style that was quite slow at times, not quite reaching their full potential.

7 Drew McIntyre vs. Bobby Roode - 7.30 (NXT Takeover: Brooklyn III)

McIntyre vs Roode

Both Drew McIntyre and Bobby Roode have similar styles, which is hard-hitting but ultimately quite slow. They like to take their time and build a story and while that can work if things kick into the next gear, that didn't happen here.

The match simply never picked up in terms of pace, which was a shame. The fundamentals were perfectly executed here, which was expected, but it just wasn't a thrilling title match.

6 Samoa Joe vs. Finn Balor - 7.28 (NXT Takeover: The End)

This match took place inside of a steel cage, which should have added a real excitement to this encounter. However, it felt like a real restriction to them overall, as they were stronger when working without any stipulation like this.

Here, they had to focus on adding elements in from the cage, rather than just focusing on what they do best. While it was an entertaining encounter, it wasn't the greatest example of their in-ring work.

5 Raquel Gonzalez vs. Io Shirai - 7.21 (NXT Takeover: Stand & Deliver: Night One)

Raquel Gonzalez and Io Shirai had good chemistry inside of the ring together, but this particular match wasn't one of the most exciting. The two women got the chance to headline NXT Takeover and while they put on a good match, it didn't end up being one of the best main events of all time.

They didn't get as much time as many other Takeover main events had been provided, which didn't help matters. This was Raquel's big moment of winning the NXT Women's Championship, but she would go on to have better matches.

4 Bobby Roode vs. Shinsuke Nakamura - 7.07 (NXT Takeover: San Antonio)

This was the first of two main events between the two men and it was seen as the weaker of them. Once again, the pace was just too slow within this encounter, and the fact they didn't get to the necessary pace for a main event stopped fans from enjoying this as much.

A slow main event can be enjoyable with the right people, but this match ended up dragging on for too long, lasting almost 30 minutes. It was simply too long for an encounter to be this slow, which stopped it from being one of the best.

3 Kein Owens vs. Sami Zayn - 6.75 (NXT Takeover: Unstoppable)

Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn (NXT Takeover: Unstoppable)

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn's rivalry is often seen as one of the greatest in NXT history, however, this particular match was considered to be one of the worst according to Cagematch.net. A big reason for that was the lack of a clean finish.

This ended in a no contest, which is never something that people want from their main event matches and that is likely why it wasn't voted as highly. The energy and passion was there from the two men, but ultimately they are capable of much more.

2 Samoa Joe vs. Karrion Kross - 6.59 (NXT Takeover: 36)

There was a lot of excitement for this particular match because Samoa Joe was making his return to in-ring action at this show. However, the experienced wrestler was clearly not at full fitness here, which is why the match was so slow.

It was to be expected due to the lack of time he had spent in the ring, but Karrion Kross wasn't much better in this one either. While they tried to make this a physical brawl it just didn't connect in the manner people hoped, with this being a poor encounter.

1 Keith Lee vs. Karrion Kross - 5.44 (NXT Takeover: XXX)

This one was easily the worst NXT Takeover main event and it wasn't an enjoyable match at all. They were put into a difficult situation early on in the encounter when Karrion Kross was legitimately injured, and the fact he was able to fight through that is something that deserves huge credit.

However, the match just never got going and was far too slow to ever get people to truly enjoy it. They weren't able to work at the level expected from a Takeover main event or from the two wrestlers involved.
