The 10 Saddest Things About Klaus
Liam Parker
Klaus is often a comedic character in The Umbrella Academy, but he is also a pretty tragic character. Here are the saddest things about him.
The Umbrella Academy introduced viewers to a world of complex and troubled characters. It was a world where the shared trauma of a group of individuals with powerful abilities led to their separation from each other. A world of reluctant, flawed heroes, and, they were loveable for it.
The series showed how their ties and impending circumstances brought them back together, how they worked best together. One of those individuals was Klaus Hargreeves, who like all of them, endured many difficult trials throughout his early life and the progression of the series.
10 He Lost Ben Twice
When the Hargreeves siblings were young and training in The Umbrella Academy, they went out on missions. In flashbacks, the team - minus Vanya - could be seen fighting crime together. However, at one point Ben died on a mission. Although it has yet to have been revealed how, a monument of Ben as a boy is in the Hargreeves yard, immortalizing him. Klaus's abilities give him a connection to the dead, and unlike the others, he had Ben by his side even after death. But he was isolated in his connection to him. Klaus lost Ben again when Ben sacrificed himself to save Vanya while in his corporeal form.
9 He Was Abducted & Tortured
In the first season, Hazel and Cha-Cha blasted into the Hargreeves' home in their pursuit of Five. But after an unsuccessful attempt, they abducted an unsuspecting Klaus for information and leverage.
Klaus endured painful torture and masked his uncertainty that he would be saved with a facade of nonchalance and dark humor. Klaus was forced into withdrawal, increasing his physical and mental suffering.
8 He Lost Dave Twice
After Klaus's abduction and torture at the hands of Hazel and Cha-Cha, he is accidentally sent into the past by a briefcase portal. Klaus ends up in the midst of the Vietnam War. It was during that horrific and intense time that he bonds and falls in love with Dave. But Dave died on the battlefield with Klaus helpless to save him. In season 2, Klaus saw an opportunity to find Dave before he joined the Army, but he was a stranger to Dave. Although Dave joined the Marines instead, possibly saving him, Klaus's final moments with the one he loved were extremely difficult.
7 He Wasn't Recognised As A Veteran
The only person who shared in Klaus's time in the Vietnam War was Dave, and when Klaus returned to the present, he was alone with the memories. Because of Klaus's age and appearance making it impossible for him to have fought in the Vietnam war, Klaus wasn't accepted by his fellow veterans.
They believed he was mocking them. He went inside a veteran's bar only to get into a fight with several of the veterans there. All he wanted was to have some peace, to look at the photo of the person he loved and honor him.
6 He Was Constantly Underestimated & Not Taken Seriously
Oftentimes, Klaus's siblings saw him as useless because he was the one who didn't take anything seriously. He was also the one who used substances to numb the pain, numb his haunting powers. When the siblings reunited at the Hagreeves' house for their father's final farewell, they were shocked by the sudden appearance of Five. When Five revealed the truth of the Apocalypse, Klaus was ignored and he wasn't listened to when it came to his suggestions about helping Vanya. He was left out of group decisions and seen as a deadbeat.
5 He Experienced A Traumatizing Childhood
Reginald Hargreeves saw to the training and discipline of his adopted children. He put his research and the world's welfare before individualized love and attention, creating an android mother called Grace to fulfill those necessities. In the case of Klaus, Reginald wanted to eradicate any fear he had towards the dead. He locked him in a mausoleum and used the exposure to train Klaus, but he only succeeded in creating a severely traumatic environment. It was this experience and those like it that lead Klaus to search for ways to repress his powers.
4 He Numbed His Powers & Himself
Due to his past experiences, Klaus focused on blocking out his powers instead of accepting them. He didn't want to control them if it meant further exposure to the past, to the dead, or to the things he would rather forget. Because of this, he was unaware of just how powerful and incredible his connection to the dead really was. He underestimated himself and let his past experiences determine his everyday actions.
3 He Was Forgotten By His Siblings
When Hazel and Cha-Cha took Klaus from the Hagreeves' home, no one looked for him nor noticed his absence. “I’m the one person in that house nobody will even notice is gone.” And he was right.
As Klaus was being tortured by two assassins who were intent on killing Five and had taken lives before with no remorse, his siblings were busy with other things. Klaus eventually escaped because of Eudora.
2 The Moment He Conjured Dave Was Erased By Five
Before Five turned back and erased time in the episode "The Day That Wasn't," Klaus had succeeded in conjuring Dave. He had asked Diego to restrict him forcing himself to focus, forcing himself to experience pain. And he was triumphant, if only for a moment. But this moment of elation was gone within seconds and erased from his mind.
1 His Efforts Weren't Appreciated
In season 1, Klaus puts himself in harm's way many times but his efforts aren't truly appreciated. He is someone who wants to be close to people yet finds himself isolated most of the time. He thinks he is useless and disregards his own safety and self-worth, but he always tries his best in the moment. His compassion is often overlooked and his observations belittled.
