Stars We've Sadly Lost So Far In 2023

Writer Daniel Cobb

Actor Ryan O'Neal, who was known for his roles in the films "Love Story" and "Paper Moon," died on December 8, 2023.  During the 1960s, O'Neal was a staple of the primetime soap "Peyton Place," where he portrayed Rodney Harrington for 501 episodes.  O'Neal's third child, Patrick O'Neal,  announced the news of O'Neal's death on Instagram, calling his dad "my hero." He added, "I looked up to him and he was always bigger than life." The late actor was 82, and his son did not reveal a cause of death.

O'Neal did not receive any formal training to become an actor. Instead, O'Neal had experience as a boxer and stuntman prior to his breakout role on "Peyton Place." In addition to Patrick, O'Neal was the father of Tatum, Griffin, and Redmond O'Neal. When she was 9, Tatum and O'Neal acted together in "Paper Moon." Tatum was 10 when she was awarded an Oscar, and she holds the record for being the youngest actor to achieve this honor.

Unfortunately, O'Neal had a complicated relationship with his children, which included allegations of physical and emotional abuse, as well as struggles with drug abuse. Due to these traumas, Griffin and Tatum went several years without contacting their father. However, the father and daughter later reconciled after the 2009 death of O'Neal's partner, Farrah Fawcett.  "I loved him very much and know he loved me too," Tatum informed People. "I feel very lucky that we ended on such good terms."
