Seinfeld: 10 Best Kramer & Newman Episodes

Writer Isabella Bartlett

While Jerry and Newman were bitter rivals on Seinfeld, the mailman was a great comedic foil for Kramer, often encouraging his get-rich-quick schemes.

Kramer and Newman in Seinfeld

One of the greatest late additions to the cast of Seinfeld was Wayne Knight, who joined the show in its third season in the role of Jerry and Kramer’s unscrupulous neighbor Newman. For the most part, Newman is a foil for Jerry. Their intense rivalry is encapsulated by the venomous exchange of hellos whenever they’re in a room together. But Newman is also a hilarious foil for Kramer.

Whereas Jerry, George, and Elaine discourage Kramer’s get-rich-quick schemes, Newman is often an active participant. From recruiting the homeless to pull rickshaws around New York to driving a mail van full of recyclables to Michigan, these are Kramer and Newman’s wildest misadventures.

10 The Bookstore (Season 9, Episode 17)

Kramer pulls Newman in a rickshaw in Seinfeld

While George is trying to return a book of art he took into the bathroom in season 9’s “The Bookstore,” Kramer and Newman launch yet another zany get-rich-quick scheme: introducing rickshaws into New York City travel.

They recruit homeless people to pull their rickshaws, but the first guy just steals it on his test run. Kramer and Newman start timing him and he just makes off with the rickshaw and never comes back.

9 The Shower Head (Season 7, Episode 16)

Seinfeld, Kramer, and Newman with low flow showers in Seinfeld

In season 7’s “The Shower Head,” the super of Jerry and Kramer’s apartment building replaces all the building’s shower heads with “low-flow” showerheads to save water.

The episode gets a lot of comedic mileage out of showing characters with flat, lifeless hair – especially Kramer. When he and Newman get sick of the “low-flow” showerheads, they get in touch with a black-market dealer to buy the showerheads used to clean elephants at the circus. Kramer ends up getting blasted out of his bathtub.

8 The Millennium (Season 8, Episode 20)

Kramer and Newman start planning competing New Year’s Eve parties for Y2K in 1997 in the season 8 episode “The Millennium.” (This context is lost on streaming audiences who binge-watch the show unaware of when each specific episode originally aired.)

Kramer stores chairs and already inflated balloons in Jerry’s apartment for a party that’s more than two years away. Newman has somehow managed to book Christopher Cross to perform.

7 The Ticket (Season 4, Episode 4)

Kramer suffers a head injury early in season 4’s “The Ticket,” which interferes with his already-established plan to help Newman get out of a speeding ticket.

Newman wants Kramer to appear in court and tell the judge that he’s suicidal, which is why Newman was in such a hurry. However, due to his head injury, Kramer is unable to remember the story and unwittingly destroys Newman’s case.

6 The Engagement (Season 7, Episode 1)

The season 7 premiere “The Engagement” primarily focuses on George becoming engaged to his ex-girlfriend Susan Ross following a conversation with Jerry about how they’re wasting their lives.

But in the hysterical B-plot, Elaine is being kept up at night by her neighbor’s loud dog. She teams up with Kramer to make the problem go away and they bring in Newman, who has a longstanding hatred of dogs owing to his career as a postal worker.

5 The Junk Mail (Season 9, Episode 5)

Kramer protests the mail in Seinfeld

In season 9’s “The Junk Mail,” Kramer gets sick of receiving endless junk mail and tries to opt out of receiving mail altogether. He uncovers a widespread conspiracy that threatens to bring down the postal service and Newman naturally gets caught in the middle.

Wilford Brimley gives a hilarious guest performance as the Postmaster General when Kramer and Newman are abducted and brought to his office to be intimidated.

4 The Scofflaw (Season 6, Episode 13)

Kramer and Newman in a courthouse in Seinfeld

When Kramer sees somebody littering and calls them a “pig,” a police officer overhears and thinks he’s referring to him. While he’s distracted, the driver that the cop is ticketing peels away. The cop explains that this driver is his “white whale,” a reference to Moby Dick.

Throughout the episode, Kramer realizes that the infamous titular scofflaw is his old pal Newman. The “white whale” storyline ties in hilariously with Kramer trying out the eyepatch look.

3 The Boyfriend (Season 3, Episodes 17/18)

The A-plot of the season 3 two-parter “The Boyfriend” sees Jerry befriending baseball legend Keith Hernandez and going through all the stages of a romantic relationship but with a platonic friend.

However, Kramer and Newman play a crucial role in this storyline. They hate Keith Hernandez because they believe he once spat on them at a Mets game, but Jerry disputes their account in a hysterical parody of JFK.

2 The Old Man (Season 4, Episode 18)

Kramer and Newman in a record store in Seinfeld

When Jerry starts doing charity work with an elderly man in season 4’s “The Old Man,” the timing lines up with Kramer and Newman trying to make a quick buck by selling on old records. Jerry’s cranky older companion turns out to have an awesome record collection: Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Al Jolson, Benny Goodman.

When Newman hears about the old man’s record collection, he tells Kramer, “The old coot’s sittin’ on a mountain of gold!” However, the record store owner rebuffs them once again and they get into an intense standoff.

1 The Bottle Deposit (Season 7, Episode 21/22)

In the season 7 two-parter “The Bottle Deposit,” Kramer and Newman scheme to take a mail van full of recyclables to a state that will pay more for them than New York.

When Kramer spots Jerry’s stolen car on the highway, he reluctantly ditches his and Newman’s recycling scheme in order to follow the thief. He ends up stranding Newman at the side of the road to lighten the load.
