CW President Mark Pedowitz reassures nervous fans that the network, which just canceled 3 Arrowverse series, is "staying in the superhero business."

The CW president has given a promising statement about the future of the Arrowverse. The Arrowverse is the universe of DC comics-related properties aired by The CW, beginning with the Stephen Amell Green Arrow series titled Arrow, which premiered in 2012 and ran through 2020. The universe quickly grew, incorporating various spin-offs and shows that would later cross over with Arrow and the other programs, including Supergirl, which ran from 2015 to 2021, The Flash, which began in 2014 and is still going, and Superman & Lois, which is a Supergirl spinoff starring Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.

In the past few weeks, The CW has taken the ax to a huge portion of its television slate. The network has been struggling following the announcement that its parent companies might be putting it up for sale, and many series remained on the bubble for longer than usual during that process, only to be canceled in one fell swoop. Although certain Arrowverse series like The Flash and Superman & Lois were renewed before the sale announcement, The CW included three of their companion series in the slate of canceled shows: Naomi, which only lasted one season, Batwoman, which lasted three, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow, which just concluded season 7.

Per Variety, CW President Mark Pedowitz attempted to reassure Arrowverse fans about the future of DC programming at the network. While speaking with the press before The CW's upfronts presentation, he insisted that they were "staying in the superhero business." He also sought to remind viewers that, despite the cancellations, The Flash and Superman & Lois would be returning midseason alongside the new series Gothman Knights, which follows Batman's adopted son teaming up with the children of various Gotham villains. DC's Stargirl, which takes place in a parallel universe outside of the Arrowverse proper, is also moving to a primo position on the Fall lineup for season 3.

Their commitment to superhero projects also includes continuing their relationship with Arrowverse leading light Greg Berlanti. Berlanti, who directed the 2018 teen rom-com Love, Simon, has had a hand in every major Arrowverse series after co-creating Arrow itself with Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg. He has been a co-creator on every series except Black Lightning and Batwoman, though he holds an executive producer credit on both of those series as well.

Although The CW's clearing of the slate has been brutal for fans of their ongoing series, they still haven't dropped their brand focus of creating series out of established IPs. Although projects like Dynasty, Charmed, and Roswell, New Mexico have fallen by the wayside, their new series are similarly reboots and other IP projects, including prequels to both Walker and Supernatural. This, combined with Pedowitz's verbal commitment, does spell good news for the Arrowverse going forward, even though it's certainly going to look very different than it has in the past.
