Mickie James Reveals Why Nick Aldis Refused To Join AEW

Highlights

  • Triple H introduced Nick Aldis as the new GM of SmackDown, quickly winning over fans with his remarks and trade announcement.
  • Aldis turned down an opportunity with AEW in order to prioritize his family, but now has a chance to shine with WWE.
  • Aldis is a talented wrestler and talker, with a successful career in NWA and IMPACT Wrestling, and WWE likely has big plans for him. Mickie James may also return.

Last Friday, on the season premiere of WWE's SmackDown, Triple H came out to announce that Raw and SmackDown would now have their own individual GMs. Adam Pearce was made the GM of Raw, and in a badly kept secret, Triple H introduced Nick Alis as the GM of SmackDown. Aldis was an unknown to a majority of the fans, but he quickly won them over, first with his jab at Dominik Mysterio, and then his announcement that SmackDown had acquired fan favorite Kevin Owens in the trade for Jey Uso.

Aldis is a great wrestler, one that could wrestle anywhere in the world. His wife, Mickie James, who is rumored to be returning to WWE as well, revealed in an interview with TV Insider that her husband had the opportunity to become a bigger star a few years ago but that he turned it down for a very commendable reason. "It’s really interesting when I was back at WWE there was an opportunity for Nick to go to AEW. He turned it down because it was too much on our family for him to be on the road full-time along with me. Our son Donovan was three or four. I think about it now, and it has shifted. Nick has deserved this opportunity for a long time. A lot of people don’t realize he has been at this for almost 20 years I’d say …The way our careers have gone. It’s weird not really being in the same place for long, but I think it’s by design. We have to do our best for our son first. That means someone has to have a lighter schedule. Business picked up for the Aldis family. In the wrestling world, if people don’t know who Nick Aldis is, they will. He is an incredible talent."

Who Is Nick Aldis?

Nick Aldis might be an on-screen presence in WWE right now, but it's hard to believe that it's the only thing he'll do. Aldis is a very talented wrestler and talker who is only 36-years-old. You have to hope that the SmackDown GM role is a fun way to introduce him to casual WWE fans who don't know much about him.

So who is Nick Aldis? No, he never joined AEW, but he was the NWA Champion twice, and once defended it at All In 2018, in the days before AEW, where he lost his title to Cody Rhodes. The majority of Aldis' career has been spent with IMPACT Wrestling, where he was a world champion as well. The fact that he chose WWE this time over AEW for an on-screen role, when Tony Khan surely had a wrestling role ready for him, must mean that WWE has big unrevealed plans for the star. It remains to be seen when WWE will pull the trigger and show fans what he can do in the ring, but until then, be ready to be entertained on the mic by the very entertaining Nick Aldis. If we're lucky, we'll soon see Mickie James by his side too.
