Maryse’s Heat With The Bella Twins In WWE, Explained

Whilst WWE is driven by on-screen storylines and bad blood between wrestlers to build up matches, there is also a lot of similar tensions backstage too. This has been a common thing over the years, with wrestlers having real-life heat with one another behind the scenes. An example of that was seen during the Divas era of WWE’s women’s division, as Maryse and The Bella Twins, Nikki and Brie Bella, did not like each other. Maryse isn’t the only individual that the Bella Twins have been known to have some bad tension with. Fans may wonder as to why this all started, and who was to blame.
Maryse And The Bella Twins Were Once Great Friends
The Bella Twins and Maryse were all members of WWE’s Divas division, spending quite a few years in WWE at the same time. Though they weren’t often seen together on-screen, they were all very good friends backstage, with them even living together at one point, though life on the road made it hard for them all to regularly see each other. Either way though, there was once upon a time when everyone was on good terms and playing “happily family”, although this all came crashing down due to a few reasons, though some of these have been left pretty vague.

Maryse was let go from WWE in 2011, and The Bella Twins decided to leave in 2012. From there, the three allegedly had an agreement to always stick by one another no matter what. Of course, it is sometimes hard to keep a promise to things like this if only certain people are offered contracts, but when Nikki and Brie Bella were re-signed to WWE in 2013 and raised in profile with increasing locker room influence, it struck a chord with some of their former co-workers, including Maryse.
Maryse Believed The Bella Twins Blocked Her From Opportunities
There have been a few cases of wrestlers speaking out against The Bella Twins and the way they managed to weasel their way to gaining backstage influence, with the likes of Maria Kanellis and Kelly Kelly regarding that their returns to WWE were blocked due to the Bella Twins. This was a similar case for Maryse, though with her it was more personal due to her aforementioned agreement with the pair to stick by each other’s sides.

Although the Total Divas show has drawn some question marks over its legitimacy, it did cover some of the harsh realities of the broken relationship between these women. E!, which airs Total Divas, used this feud to hype up one of the seasons, giving a transcript to Brie Bella’s explanation on what happened. She stated, “Maryse and I were friends at work. And there was a little part of our time we lived together, even though we never saw each other. But her and I had a huge falling out about three and a half years ago due to Maryse thinking that I had blocked opportunities from her. Maryse, Nicole, and myself got offered a really great work opportunity. Unfortunately, they decided they only wanted my sister and I. Now, business is business, but somewhere along the line Maryse thought my sister and I blocked her from a contract.”
This explanation does feel as though it has some holes in it, but when looking at both sides, it is hard to know what the true reality is and whether the Bella Twins did have a hand in blocking Maryse from opportunities. It is hard to understand what their motive would have been too, but either way, Maryse believed them to be the ones to blame.
The Bella Twins And Maryse Put Their Tensions Aside To Work Together
Whilst it is unclear whether or not their feud has truly been rectified, both sides have been able to put their differences aside and work together following Maryse’s WWE return. In 2017, Maryse and The Miz feuded with Nikki Bella and John Cena for a match at WrestleMania 33, where some of their previous issues were included in the build.

The following year, Maryse once again teamed up with her husband to battle Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella, with everyone working together like professionals. It is good that they were all able to put their differences aside for the sake of entertainment, though it is really a shame that a friendship was dealt with years worth of disaster. Whether it was egos which came into play or simply just miscommunication, there were years in which Maryse had a dislike for the Bella Twins due to believing them to have cut her out of business opportunities, and got in the way of her returning to WWE over the years.
