Lower Decks Season 4 Is Doing New Star Trek Stories

In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episodes 1 and 2, Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells), and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) all received promotions from Ensigns to Lieutenants, junior grade. The new Lt. Boimler gets to lead a mission for the first time in Lower Decks season 4, episode 3, and it goes about as well as one would expect. Despite his promotion, Boimler continues to get in his own way rather than relying on his considerable knowledge and experience.

It remains to be seen how the Lower Deckers' new ranks will change the dynamic of the show. Lower Decks season 4 has also introduced a mysterious new enemy powerful enough to disable and destroy entire starships. While this mystery will likely last throughout most of the season, it provides the opportunity for the USS Cerritos to become involved in a major Starfleet mission. After the success of the crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Lower Decks can tell even biggerstories that could significantly affect the Star Trek universe.
