Josh Brolin Gives Promising Update On Sicario 3

Josh Brolin, who plays Matt Graver in the Sicario franchise, says that a Sicario 3 script has been written and that it deserves to be made.

Josh Brolin says Sicario 3 deserves to be made

Josh Brolin says that Sicario 3 is a possibility and that it deserves to be made. Brolin plays Matt Graves, a CIA operative who runs a Joint Task Force against Mexican drug cartels, in the Sicario franchise. The first film in the series, 2015's Sicario, was directed by Denis Villeneuve with a script from Yellowstone's Taylor Sheridan. The film co-starred Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Jon Bernthal, and Daniel Kaluuya. A sequel was made in 2018, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, once again written by Sheridan, but directed by Stefano Sollima (Without Remorse), and focused on Brolin and Del Doro's characters.

The first Sicario was a modest hit, serving more as a showcase for Villeneuve's style and Roger Deakins' cinematography than its plot, while giving Del Toro and Brolin some meatier material to work with. Blunt's character, Kate Macer, was the lead, but her journey had turned out very differently by the end of the film, leading to the focus on both Brolin and Del Toro's characters in the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado. The sequel made slightly less than its predecessor, but proved a solid enough box office performer to warrant a follow-up, especially given the open ending of Sicario 2, which left several story threads dangling.

While speaking to THR, Brolin was asked if all hope should be abandoned for Sicario 3. Brolin responded positively, saying that it's still a project "at the forefront" for those involved and confirming that a script has been written. Brolin went on to say that Sicario 3 deserves to be made, and he remains hopeful that it will happen. Read the actor's full quote:

"I just don’t know when we’ll do it. We may be 80. (Laughs.) But it’s very much at the forefront of all of our minds. It’s been written and it’s been rewritten. So it’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it. So don’t give up! (Laughs.)"

Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro in Sicario 2

It's unlikely that Villeneuve would return for Sicario 3, as he's busy preparing to shoot Dune: Part 2, which is also expected to have a beefed-up role for Brolin's character, Gurney Halleck. Brolin currently stars in the Prime Video serious Outer Range, and recently wrapped the comedy Brothers with Peter Dinklage and Brendan Fraser. Del Toro also has a stacked deck of projects on his plate, including Oliver Stone's White Lies and Jamie Foxx's All-Star Weekend, so even if Sicario 3 is written and ready, it may be some time before all the principal actors can return to make it.

The Sicario films have made for an interesting franchise, which has continued to evolve into a thrilling cat-and-mouse style tale about greed, corruption, violence and revenge. The complex characters of the Sicario world have made it what it is, as they aren't defined by being "good" or "bad," but rather "strong" or "weak." Neither Brolin or Del Toro's characters see themselves as villains, but simply as men doing as they're ordered. However, Sicario 2 left both characters at a crossroads, and there is a confrontation lying in wait that could prove fertile ground for Sicario 3's story. Hopefully, all involved can find the time to bring it to a satisfying conclusion that serves the arc of the story thus far, perhaps with the return of Blunt's Sicario character for good measure.
