Is There A Headphone Jack?
Emma Terry
The Apple iPhone SE 2020 doesn't come with a headphone jack. However, there are plenty of ways to listen, including connecting headphones.
The Apple iPhone SE 2 is a fantastic option for a powerful and compact phone, but what options are there for listening? And does it have a headphone jack like the original iPhone SE? Audio is an important consideration for a mobile phone. Since so many people rely on their phones daily, the sound quality and volume levels need to be exceptional. There are few things more annoying than taking a call and struggling to understand the caller.
Apple released the first iPhone SE in 2016. It marked a return to a smaller screen size, bucking the trend of ever bigger and heavier phones. Following the original SE's popularity, Apple introduced the iPhone SE 2 in 2020. This time, Apple increased the size to match that of the iPhone 8, and improved the processor and other internals to specifications more similar to the iPhone 11.
Another change with the Apple iPhone SE 2 is the removal of the headphone jack. One of the highlights of the first iPhone SE was the built-in 3.5mm headphone jack. Users could plug in a pair of wired headphones and start listening to their music instantly — no annoying dongle required. Unfortunately, you won't find a headphone jack on the iPhone SE 2. The only port it has is a Lightning one, which is used for charging, syncing, and wired listening.
All Listening Options For The iPhone SE 2
Despite there being no headphone jack on the iPhone SE 2, users still have plenty of listening options. For starters, that Lightning port is actually quite useful for wired audio. Apple sells Lightning Earpods for $20 which you can plug directly into the iPhone to start listening. Plus, if you have another pair of wired headphones you'd rather use, you can connect them to the iPhone SE 2 using a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter.
And you're not just limited to wired listening options. Like all other smartphones, the iPhone SE 2 works great with wireless headphones — specifically, ones made by Apple. Whether you get a pair of AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, Beats Fit Pro, or Beats Studio Buds, they'll provide the best wireless listening experience on the iPhone SE 2. And, of course, you can always listen to audio using the iPhone SE 2's external stereo speakers.
Will Future iPhone SE Models Have A Headphone Jack?
Unfortunately, all signs point to the headphone jack remaining off of the iPhone SE. The current iPhone SE 3 — which launched in March 2022 — also lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack. Combined with there being no indication that future models will bring back the legacy port, it's safe to say that the headphone jack is gone for good on Apple's iPhone SE family.
