In-depth PokeDex Project | Bulbagarden

Writer Owen Barnes
Bringing this back, both in the hopes of finding some more interested writers and to show off some of the new stuff!

First, I just submitted an entry for Rotom, which lead me to the realization that all of Rotom's plasma colors are based on real-world noble gas plasma colors:

(The reason Xe with impurities is used for Mow Rotom is because, up until a certain point, xenon was difficult to purify in quantity, so both green and blue were listed as its ionization colors until they realized green was the product of small amounts of air mixing with the gas).

The other thing I learned is that Rotom's 'default' form (according to the Rotom Catalogue) is, apparently, it possessing a light bulb. The more you know!

The actual entry looks like this:

479 – ROTOM
Plasma Pokémon
Electric/Ghost*
Average Height: 0.3 m
Average Weight: 0.3 kg
Average Lifespan: N/A
Species name: Poltergeist mōtō

Description: Rotom’s body is composed of plasma. It is known to infiltrate electronic devices and wreak havoc, even taking control of some kinds of machines in order to cause mischief. Research continues on this Pokemon, which could be the power source of a unique motor. One boy’s invention led to the development of many different machines that take advantage of Rotom’s unique capabilities.

*When Rotom possesses a convection microwave oven that uses a special motor, it becomes Heat Rotom and is Electric/Fire-type. It also has a flair for manipulating flames. This form of Rotom enjoys making mischief by turning up the heat, and it will gleefully burn your favorite outfit.

*When Rotom possesses a washing machine that uses a special motor, it becomes Wash Rotom and is Electric/Water-type. This form of Rotom enjoys coming up with water-based pranks. Be careful with it if you don’t want your room flooded. It blasts out water to get enemies to back down.

*When Rotom possesses a refrigerator powered by a special motor, it becomes Frost Rotom and is Electric/Ice-type. It battles by spewing cold air, and loves to play pranks that are freezing cold. You may find it’s turned the bath you just filled to solid ice!

*When Rotom possesses a fan that has a special motor, it becomes Fan Rotom and is Electric/Flying-type. In this form, Rotom applies its new power over wind to its love of pranks. It will happily blow away any important documents it can find, as well as its opponents.

*When Rotom possesses a lawn mower that has a special motor, it becomes Mow Rotom and is Electric/Grass-type. In this form, Rotom focuses its antics on plants. Any flowers you were growing are going to get mowed down, and as it mows down grass, it scatters the clippings everywhere.

Biology: Rotom’s ‘real’ body is a relatively massless electrical plasma that is telekinetically manipulated via Rotom’s Ghost-type powers (similar to Gastly in nature). This plasma’s color is typically altered by whichever secondary Type Rotom possesses – it changes to a brilliant red for Heat Rotom, deep blue for Wash Rotom, magenta for Frost Rotom, yellow for Fan Rotom, and green for Mow Rotom. Researchers believe Rotom specifically collects certain noble gases from the atmosphere and stores them in its body for this purpose, selectively ionizing them to achieve the desired color, as these match the ionization colors of gaseous neon, hydrogen, argon, helium, and xenon-air mixture respectively (with krypton comprising the neon blue of an ‘unmodified’ Rotom). Because the gases are generally dispersed into the atmosphere after use, this has little impact on the production economy of various noble gases.

Shiny Rotom adopt an unusual orange-colored secondary plasma, reminiscent of incandescent filaments or possibly ionized sodium. Unlike other Rotom, this color does not change when Rotom changes Type, indicating this color overrides the others. Research is ongoing into why this is the case.

Caretaking Advice: While all Rotom hold at least some fascination with pranks and possessing electrical devices, recent developments by Clemont Citron of Kalos have led to their adaptation into everyday life, providing several helpful services in exchange for guaranteed connection to the Internet and a power supply. As such, many Rotom present in such devices like Rotom Pokedexes, Rotom Phones, and Rotomi Machines hold little interest in the outside world beyond fulfilling whatever function the machine they possess is meant to do, so their ‘prankster’ reputation has dropped significantly.

That being said, a wild Rotom or an unrestrained one can still cause significant havoc. Any machine that relies on a motor or gas discharge of some kind (including cathode-ray TV’s) is susceptible to possession, and Rotom can often overload these machines in the process, breaking them permanently. Other electronics that are sensitive to electromagnetic fields or discharges can also be disrupted by Rotom’s presence, and need special mu-metal shielding (a soft nickel-iron alloy with high magnetic permeability) to retain function in the presence of a Rotom. While the prevalence of gas discharge in machines has dropped significantly since Rotom were first discovered, motors have increased in application and Rotom have adapted to match – exercise bikes, electric cars or other vehicles, and electric lawnmowers are all examples of more ‘modern’ adaptations (however, only one of these has been approved for use in battle as Mow Rotom). Additionally, certain smartphones have been adapted to allow Rotom access, and these have gained widespread popularity due to their self-levitating and Rotom serving as a far more adaptable and ‘smart’ AI than any developed by humans.

Additionally, Rotom’s plasma body means it is an electrical hazard to be near one – Trainers owning a Rotom should be careful never to touch it, as this will always result in a painful electrocution that could potentially be fatal if Rotom has built up enough power. Rotom who are startled or 'counterpranked' are also known to suddenly ionize entire rooms of air around them due to being startled, a similarly painful outcome.

Rotom generally eat electricity, and as such will possess appliances that are ‘plugged in’ to ensure a steady supply while resting. Generally speaking, they consume no more electricity than their possessed appliance would while turned on. When not possessing any specific machine, they prefer to 'inhabit' large lightbulbs (approx. 0.15 m in length).
